In the summer of 1978 an English man named Steven was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered something strange. Some of his wheat was lying on the ground. The flattened wheat formed(形成)a circle about six meters across . Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat.
Three years later a farmer who lived nearby discovered almost the same circles in one of his fields. These circles were larger—nearly 15 meters across . That same year , another English farmer discovered three circles of flattened wheat on his land—one large circle between two small circles. During the following years, farmers in England found circles in their fields more and more often.
The circles are called “crop circles” because they usually appear in fields of wheat or corn. The wheat in the circles lies on the ground but is never broken; it keeps on growing, and the farmers can later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form at night. They appear only in the months from May to September. What causes the crop circles?
At first, people thought that some kids were making them as a joke, or that farmers were making them to attract tourists.(In fact, in 1991, two men said they made the circles themselves, but many scientists don’t believe them.) People tried to copy them: They tried to make circles exactly like the ones the farmers had found. They couldn’t do it. They couldn’t enter a field of wheat without leaving tracks, and they couldn’t flatten the wheat without breaking it.
Several times people reported seeing stranger objects near the fields where crop circles later appeared. Many people believe that these crop circles are the messages sent by living things from outer space(外層空間)or the marks left by their spaceships.
Scientists who have studied the crop circles try to find out what causes them. In the summer of 1990 some scientists spent three weeks in the part of England where many circles have appeared. They had all the latest high-tech equipment(最新高科技設備). The equipment—worth 1.8 million dollars—got nothing. But one night, as the scientists were watching a field, crop circles formed in the field behind them, which were quite different from the others. The scientists had neither seen nor heard anything.
When Steven discovered the crop circles on his land in 1978, he said, “It was just like something that had landed in the field from the air and gone back up again. I don’t know what to make of these things.”
Crop circles have appeared in England, Japan, the United States and Russia. Experts from all over the world have studied them, and they say what Steven said: They don’t know what to make of these things.
【小題1】Which picture is probably the one formed in the field behind the scientists?

【小題2】“Flattened wheat” means ___________.

【小題3】The passage is mainly about something ___________ .

B.that cannot be solved but found all around the world
C.that cannot be made clear or understood

What would happen if you tried to blow a soap bubble in freezing weather? Would it freeze solid(固體) and fall to the ground? Would you have to hit it to break it? These questions happened to me on a cold winter day. It was too cold to play in the snow, but it was a perfect time to experiment with blowing frozen bubbles.

To blow frozen bubbles, I used dishwashing soap and a drop of glycerin(甘油) to make it even better. I chose a place out of the wind, and blew bubbles the same way I always do. I watched to see what would happen. Here’s what I learned.

If the temperature is low enough, the skin of the bubbles frosts over (結霜), becoming cloudy instead of clear. And what about those rainbow swirls(旋轉) you see in soap bubbles? The rainbow colors stay even when the bubbles frost, but they don’t swirl anymore. The bubbles still stay in the air. They don’t fall to the ground any faster than they would on a warm summer day.

When these frozen bubbles break, they don’t turn into small water drops as summer bubbles do. They turn into flashing rainbow confetti(碎屑) and move slowly to the ground. Sometimes a frozen bubble will roll across the snow without breaking. If nothing disturbs the bubble, it may stay there for a long time. Sometimes I could catch a bubble and hold it until the heat of my hand made it pop.

I learned another thing about blowing frozen bubbles. It’s so interesting that I want to try it again next year.

1.It is the perfect time to blow frozen bubbles on a ___________day.

A.cold winter        B.warm spring        C.hot summer        D.sunny autumn

2.When the frozen bubbles break, _________.

A.they make a big sound                   B.they turn into small drops

C.they fall to the ground like rain             D.they become rainbow confetti

3.The purpose of the passage is _______.

A.to learn how to do a science experiment

B.to show the experiment of blowing frozen bubbles

C.to discover games that are fun to play in the snow

D.to invent a new kind of soap that makes stronger bubbles

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded

in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was

never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing

car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on

the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw

the curtains(窗簾) seem to move when there was no wind. A

very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times

louder than in the day. My imagination (想象) would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the "enemy(敵人) " would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn't let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes(過程) growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

1. The author had _________kind(s) of fears when she was a child.

A. one                        B. two                        C. three                     D. none

2. _________ would scare the author at night.

A. Streetlight and car lights                                         B. Wild animals and enemies

C. Moving curtains and wind                                           D. Strange sights and sounds

3.When she went to some other places, she would _________.

A. walk away without others                                           B. take a bus by herself

C. follow others closely                                            D. make sure not to take a wrong bus

4.Which of the following would be possibly true when she was a child?

A. She was usually popular among people.

B. She was always the leader of the others.

C. She always' got poor grades.

D. She was not at all liked by others.

5.The underlined word "overcome" means "_________" in Chinese.

A. 接受                         B. 忍受                        C. 信服                        D. 克服
