Nobody expected to find them there, outside the city walls. The broken bones of 30 or 40 bodies lay with one on top of the other. It looked bad. There was no sign of battle. Everyone wondered why all the people had died at the same moment. Men came day after day to dig and remove the earth. They worked with great care, like detectives. Each day something new was discovered. Every bone was studied. Soft brushes were used so that nothing was damaged. It all took a very long time, and there were many puzzles.

There were many things of value in the building with her-gold for her head, neck and arms, and clothes covered with gold. It was clear that the woman had been a queen. 【題目】 Detective fiction is popular in many countries. There are two kinds: stories in which private detectives solve a crime, usually a murder; and stories in which a police detective solve a crime. Both kinds of detective story are equally popular.
The first private detective---PI for private investigator in the USA---was probably Arson Lupin, a Frenchman. However, stories about this detective are not read nowadays. For most people the first, and perhaps the greatest, private detective, was the Englishman, Sherlock Holmes, a character created by the author Sir Author Conan Doyle. All the Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into most languages. The best known is the Hound of the Baskervilles.
The first police detective was probably Sergeant Cuff who solves the crime in the Moonstone, one of the first detective novels in English. The author, Wilkie Collins, was a close friend of Charles Dickens, the best English novelists of all the time.
Crime fiction has been as popular in the USA as in the UK, and some of the most famous American writers have written detective fiction. The most highly regarded is probably Raymond Chandler whose PI, Phillip Marlowe, is the archetype (典型的) private detective. Also popular, although not so well-written, are the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner.
After Conan Doyle, the most widely read private detective novelist is the English novelist Agatha Christie. She created two unforgettable characters--- Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie’s have also been translated into most languages.
Detective fiction is as popular today as it has ever been, probably because many novels have been adapted for television which introduced them to many people who do not usually read new detective crime fiction.

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the influences it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really make people healthier.
Tests were carried out to study the influences of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar influences to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial (有益的).
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce pain on the body. In one test doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which reduce both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics (診所), in which they try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. Because of good influences, such clinics are very popular with all kinds of patients. Doctors have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial influences similar to those caused by laughter.
Since laughter is so effective, try to laugh as much as you can. Believe it will do much good to your health. If you are not used to laughing in front of others, you can also smile as often as possible to others because it can have almost the same influence.
