Monday... Oh,I don't like Monday because I have to go back to school again after the weekend. Tuesday is not so bad. I usually play tennis with a friend of mine (我的) after school. On Wednesday evening I don't go out. I stay at home and do my homework. I like Thursday because the next day is Friday. I always go out on Friday―maybe (或許) to the cinema. I love the weekend. On Saturdays I stay in bed until (直到) lunchtime, and I sometimes go to the shops in the afternoon. In the evening we go to a club. There are good bands every Saturday. Then on Sundays I go to my friend's house or she comes to mine. I usually visit my grandmother for an hour in the afternoon. Then the weekend is over and it's Monday-., and I feel bad again!

 Dear Jim ,

I hope I can get help from you.

I hope I can make friends on the Internet. I think it's very interesting. And I want to know more about the world. But my teachers say it's not good for us to make friends on the Internet. What should I do?

                                                                          Lisa

Hi,Lisa, Thank you for writing to me.

I say when your teachers say it is not good for you to make friends on the Internet, they are really saying you should concentrate on (專心于) your schoolwork and not spend all your time on the computer. At your age, schoolwork must be your first work.

Of course, you need to have some ways to relax. Making friends on the Internet may help you to relax. And if you keep getting good grades, and if you show your teachers you are learning about other parts of the world at the same time,I think they will agree with you.

Best Wishes

When I was growing up in America,I was ashamed of my mother's Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the limitations (局限) of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell (叫喊) at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票經(jīng)紀(jì)人) .I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, "This is Mrs. Tan."

And my mother was standing beside me,whispering loudly, u Why he don't send me cheek already two weeks long.”

And then,in perfect English I said, "I'm getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago,but it hasn't arrived."

Then she talked more loudly. "What he want? I come to New York to tell him front of his boss. " And so I turned to the stockbroker again, "I can't stand any more excuses. If I don't receive the check immediately,I am going to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week."

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there redfaced,my mother, the real Mrs. Tan,was shouting to his boss in her broken English.

When I was a teenager,my mother's broken English embarrassed me. But now,I see it differently. To me,my mother's English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language,as I hear it,is vivid (生動的) ,direct, and full of observation (觀察) and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.
