In 1620, about half the USA was covered by forests. Today the forests have almost gone. A lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand. China doesn't want to copy the USA's example. We're planting more and more trees. We've built the " Great Green Wall" of trees across northern part of our country. The Great Green Wall is 7,000 kilometres long, and between 400 and 1,700 kilometres wide. It will stop the wind from blowing the earth away. It will stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south. More "Great Green Walls" are needed. Trees must be grown all over the world. Great Green Walls will make the world better.

There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own.
·Plant flowers, grass or trees.
·Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there—keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.
·Turn off the lights and TV sets when you leave the room. This can save a lot of electricity.
·Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You can save some water by not letting it run. Also, use a glass cup instead of a paper cup because this saves paper.
·Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm air in.
·Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.
·Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.
·Use both sides of paper.
·Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby.
·Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth. You don’t have to wait until Earth Day to do these things. Make every day Earth Day. If everyone makes a contribution to protecting the environment, the world will become much more beautiful.

閱讀與回答問題
1970 was “World Conservation(保護(hù)) Year”. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is at risk(危險(xiǎn)).They hoped that people would do something quickly to conserve nature.
Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 are existing. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology.
Here is another example. In 1620, about half the USA was covered by forests. In 1850, about a third was covered by forests. Today the forests have almost gone. A lot of good land has gone with them, leaving only sand. Today too many trees are still being cut down.
We’re changing the earth, the air and water. We can’t live without these things. If we go on like this, we shall destroy ourselves. A lot of people know that conservation is necessary. Many things have been done to save our world. For example, people plant more and more trees on the hills. In a small town in the USA a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record by the name of NO ONE’S GOING TO CHANGE OUR WORLD. It was made by Scales, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild plants and animals. In China, a new Great Wall has been built across the northern part of the country to stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south.

It is said that another acre of the world’s forest will be destroyed forever. Why is this happening? There are two reasons — land and wood. In many countries the trees have been cut down because the land was needed for animals or crops. In other parts of the world the trees are cut down because their wood is wanted. This wood is used by local people for firewood or it is used for building. But many people don’t know that in most places the trees won’t be replaced. The soil in the forests is very thin, but it is protected by the trees. When the trees are cut down, the soil is washed away by the rain or blown away by the wind. Soon nothing can be grown on it. The  forest becomes a desert. Then more land will be needed, and more trees will be cut down.

When the forest is destroyed, it isn’t only the trees that are lost — the homes of millions of animals and plants are destroyed, too. All kinds of animals are in danger — fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, insects, and shellfish — as well as thousands of plants.

Who is to blame for this? The answer is simple: all of us. There are just too many people in the world. The world’s population is now six billion. Of course, it’s very easy to blame the local people. We don’t cut down trees. They do. But the products are bought by people like you and me — wood houses, beds, tables, chairs, paper… Why are the forests being destroyed? Just look around. You are probably using it right now.

1.People cut down large areas of trees in order to _________.

    A. grow crops        B. keep animals    C. build houses   D. get land and wood

2. In most places, __________after trees are cut down.

A. new trees can grow better                  B. forests will become deserts

C. most animals can live there                 D.people build new house there

3. According to the passage, we should  _________________ to protect the forest.

A. use fewer wood products            B. plant more trees

C. blame the local people              D. protect the soil
