When someone who is in good health dies suddenly, there is usually an inquest(審問). A coroner(驗(yàn)尸官)will do it. His job is to find out exactly how a person died.
If there is nothing suspicious about the death, he will decide that the person died from natural causes or an accident, if, however, he is suspicious, he may decide that the person’s death was caused by a person or persons unknown.
One day the coroner was trying to find out exactly what had caused the death of a local businessman, Henry Watson.
The man’s wife was explaining something. She was very sad and had to stop from time to time. The coroner did not want to make her sadder than necessary, but he had to find out the truth. There were questions he had to ask. “Mrs. Watson, I know this is painful for you,” he said, “but I want you to think very carefully and then answer my questions. You and your husband were having dinner at home. Is that correct? ”
“Yes.” ‘‘Suddenly he fell to the floor? ” “Yes.”
“You stood up and hurried to him? You knelt(跪下)beside him? His stomach was in great pain? ” “Yes.” “Did he say anything? ” The wife kept her head down.
“Please, Mrs. Watson, you must answer the question. What were his last words? ”
The wife took a deep breath and then spoke. “He said,” She replied in a very low voice, “I'm not surprised that seafood we had for dinner cost you only 50 cents.”

We might love to tell others about our unusual experiences. For example, we climbed a high
mountain, tasted a rare food, or ran into a superstar on the street. But new research suggests that sharing these unusual experiences may not be welcomed in conversation.
We all like unusual experiences, and always can't wait to share them with our friends. Some people even thought that having an unusual experience would make them the star of the conversation.
However, it was wrong. To be unusual means to be different from other people. And if you do not share similarities with the people around you, they will not welcome you in the conversation. Besides, conversations always seem to go well on more usual topics.
To find out, psychologists(心理學(xué)家)invited 68 participants(參與者)to come to the lab in groups of four. In each group, one watched a wonderful video of a magic performance, while the other three watched a cartoon video. After watching the videos, the participants sat around a table and had a short conversation.
The participants who watched the magic performance said they felt worse after the conversation than those who watched the cartoon video. That was because they felt left out during the conversation.
This finding suggests that we might want to give more thought in choosing which experiences to share with others. If an experience turns you into someone who has nothing in common with others, then no matter how good it was, it will not make you happy.
1.What kind of topic can make conversations go well?
2.Why did psychologists do such an experiment(實(shí)驗(yàn))?
3.Would you like to share your unusual experiences with your friends? Why or why not?
