What is the strongest part of your body? Your head? Bones? It’s your teeth! There is a special thing called enamel (牙釉質(zhì)) in teeth. It is the hardest thing in the human body and keeps bacteria (細(xì)菌) away. However, teeth are vulnerable (易受傷害的) to problems and disease. September 20 is National Teeth-loving Day in China. Another common problem is crooked teeth (齙牙). When your new teeth begin to grow and the old teeth haven’t fallen out, there isn’t enough space for the new ones. This causes crooked teeth.
Don’t worry. Here are some ways to keep your teeth healthy.
Brush at least twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime.
Learn to use dental floss (牙線). The floss gets rid of food that’s hidden where your toothbrush can’t get it.
Visit a dentist. He or she can check if you have any dental problems and help you clean your teeth.
Pay attention to what you eat. It is better to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of fries and drink water instead of soda.
Wear braces (牙套) to make your teeth straight and beautiful.

Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I   16  love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good   17 for the team.
A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the   18 . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. He also said that three more people would be needed as backup(替補(bǔ)).  19 , four times that many students were at the meeting. So Mr. Gaudi said we would have a   20 and the top eight scorers(得分者) would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a   21 way to decide.
Yesterday, all of the hopefuls went to the dining hall after school. We would have to decide the starting line-up(陣容). Mr. Gaudi acted as the host. After a few hours, all the   22 on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition   23 the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.
Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(領(lǐng)先).  24 I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted   25 even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla   26 , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she   27 she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of   28 the show up close.
Was I cheating(欺騙) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t   29 it. It won’t hurt the team   30 Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.

I’m seventeen. I worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter (柜臺) and I put things in their bags for them and carried things to their cars. It was hard work.
While working, I wore a plate with my name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, “Mr. Castle, how are you?” We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, “It was nice talking to you, Brett.” I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didn’t remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put “Irving” down on my name plate. If he’d have said, “Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?” I’d have been ready for him. There’s nothing personal here.
The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldn’t accept tips(小費(fèi)). Okay, I’m outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction(反應(yīng))is to take a quarter and give it to me. I’d say, “I’m sorry, I can’t.” They’d get angry. When you give someone a tip, you’re sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, “Oh, thanks a lot.” When you say, “I’m sorry, I can’t.” they feel a little put down. They say, “No one will know.” And they put it in your pocket. You say, “I really can’t.” It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the store’s belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn’t understand the strangeness of some people’s ideas. One lady actually put a tip in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I was puzzled and didn’t know what to do. Should I d have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something?
I decided that one year had been enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.
小題1:. From the second paragraph, we can infer (推斷) that ________.
A.the writer didn’t like the impersonal part of his job

Some people have a very poor sense of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there the next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I would say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps. I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around (停留)for a little while. Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your classes on the first day, but it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did, and so will your new friend!
Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can make the first day a good one. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers(運(yùn)動鞋). It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case (以防萬一)you don’t have time in the morning.
小題1:The underlined phrase “kick off” in the second paragraph probably means “_____”.
A.startB.studyC.findD.teach
小題2:The last paragraphs mainly tell us about ________.
A.what to know about a new school
B.how to prepare for a new school
C.what to do on your first day of school
D.how to spend your first day of school
小題3:According to the passage you usually do everything on the first day of school except      .
A.introduce yourself
B.learn about the school rules
C.make new friends
D.go over your new lessons
