【題目】Many teachers believe that hands-on experiences are the best way to learn. A group of students in the United Sates is putting that belief to the test.

The students are from the Stevens Institute of Technology. They successfully designed and built a robot for discovering mines at the bottom of the sea. The underwater robot is called Perseus II. It costs about $15,000 to build. The students made the robot to answer a challenge from the U.S. Department of Defense(國(guó)防部).

The students use a video game controller to direct its movements. Devices known as

thrusters enable the robot to go up, down and toward its target in the water. Video cameras on the robot send images back to a computer through a 13-meter-long cable(電纜). Perseus II also has a set of lasers(激光), they are used to measure the size of an object.

The robot is the creation of five college students. They worked for over six months to design and build Perseus II.

"Their goal was to go down and find the mine and not only just find it but provide information to an expert on the surface so he or she could make a decision whether it was something dangerous or not before they removed it," Michael DeLorne said.

Perseus II was successfully tested in Florida with similar robots built at other engineering schools. In a separate development, new students at the Stevens Institute of Technology have already started on the next project. It is a flying vehicle they are calling Perseus III.

1Why did the five college students make the robot?

A. To go up, down and toward its target underwater.

B. To provide information to an expert on the surface.

C. To answer a challenge from the Department of Defense.

D. To prove hands-on experiences is the best way to learn.

2Which of the following is NOT part of Perseus II?

A. a set of lasers B. a computer

C. video cameras D. a video game controller

3.What does the word “mine” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean ?

A. 寶藏 B. 海魚 C. 礦井 D. 水雷

4What can we infer(推斷) about Perseus III according to the passage?

A. Perseus III may be used in the sky.

B. Perseus III has been successfully tested in Florida.

C. Perseus III will cost more money and time.

D. Perseus III and Perseus II are made by the same students.

【題目】 For those of us who are studying at school, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam times so bad that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing; they are afraid of letting their parents and family down.1Talk to someone about it. Maybe you can speak to a friend, or someone in your family, or teachers at your place of study. If one person doesn’t help you, ask someone else.

2Here are some advice:

Ask a teacher or tutor about how to review your lessons, and exam skills—how to work when you are in an exam.

Take short rests during your time of work. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.

Plan your work: study at times when you know you will work at your best.

Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.

You need exercise to work well.3

Stop thinking about the future and failing.

If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.

If it upsets you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don’t do it! In fact, don’t even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done.4

To this advice, we could add:

If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much.5Choose something that will relax you, and make you think of other things.

A. If exams are really making you ill or worried, don’t hide your feelings.

B. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise.

C. How to get through exams?

D.You cannot change what you have written!

E.Walk, run and play sport—whatever you enjoy.

【題目】 Nowadays, TV PK shows(選秀節(jié)目)are great hit in China and have become popular among many young people. Some of them even give up their studies to attend these shows in the hope of becoming famous overnight. Some people think these shows provide people with more chances to show their talents, while others believe that attending these shows does no good to the young people.

It is true that some young people like Li Yuchun have stood out from plenty of competitors in the PK shows, but that doesn't mean attending the PK shows is a good way to become successful for all the young people. The following reasons can support my opinion. Firstly,TV PK shows bring restlessness(不安定)and might make young people hunt after fame(追逐名利)at whatever cost. Secondly, TV PK shows might be bad for young people's values. They may think attending the PK shows can make it easier to become successful, so they may look down upon the way of achieving success by hard work: Finally, if the young people fail in these shows, they will feel down.

In a word, I think taking part in TV PK shows is not a good way for young people to make a success. I suggest that young people think twice before deciding to attend a PK show.

【題目】Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect them. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we keep these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.

In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside the city to a dump (垃圾場(chǎng)). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or where there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into the sewage system. The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs and other places.

To keep mice and flies (蒼蠅) away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish -filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.

In other cities rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire bums everything but the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles () where they slowly change into something called humus (腐蝕質(zhì)), which looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow.
