Isaac Newton, the great British scientist, is often so deep in his thoughts that he will forget to eat his dinner.

One day his friend came to have dinner with him. Dinner was put on the table but Newton didn't come out of his study(書房). His friend sat down and waited for him. After waiting for quite a long time, he decided that Newton must be so deep in some new theory that he forgot all about the dinner. So he began to eat the chicken without Newton.

When he finished, he thought he would play a joke on his friend. He put all the chicken bones(骨頭)back on the dish and covered them with the dish over. Then he left Newton's house. He was quite certain that his joke would work.

Several hours later, Newton came out of his study, feeling very hungry. He saw the table was ready for dinner and so he sat down. When he lifted the cover and saw the bones of the chicken, he was greatly surprised. He turned, looked at the clock, and saw that it was long past his usual time for dinner.

"Well, well," he said to himself, "I thought I ate nothing, but I am wrong." He got up from table and went back to his study and began to work again.

Judge the following statements True (T) or False (F).

1.Newton comes from America.

2.Newton's friend didn't have dinner with him.

3.Newton's friend put all the chicken bones back on the dish.

4.Several days later, Newton came out of his study.

5.Newton has eaten the chicken.

It was over two months before Christmas when 9-year-old Mary told her father and me that she wanted a new bike. Her old Barbi bike was too old and it often needed repairing. As Christmas came nearer; her dream for a bike seemed to disappear; for she didn’t mention it again.

Then much to our surprise; on December 24th; she said that she really wanted a bike as the Christmas present more than anything else. We didn’t know what to do. It was too late. We were busy with Christmas dinner and packing presents for our children; parents and also friends till midnight. So there was no time to buy the “right bike” for our little girl. Thinking that we might in this way make our child unhappy on Christmas; we felt guilty and sad.

Suddenly my husband came up with an idea. “What if I make a little bike out of the clay (泥土) and write a note that she could trade in (交換) the model bike for a real one after Christmas?” So he spent the next 5 hours working on a small clay bike. On Christmas morning; we were very excited and waited for Mary to open the little box with the beautiful red and white bike and the note. She opened the box and read the note loudly. She looked at me and said; “So; does this mean I can trade in this bike for a real one?” Smiling; I said; “yes.”

Mary had tears in her eyes when she replied; “I would never trade in this beautiful bike that Daddy made for me. I prefer to keep it rather than get a real one.” At that moment; we thought we would have moved the god to buy her every bike on earth.

1.What did Mary want as her Christmas present?

A. A clay model bike. B. An old Barbi bike.

C. A new bike. D. Every bike.

2.Mary’s parents didn’t buy her a bike because she ______.

A. only asked for it again on December 24th

B. didn’t want it any more

C. changed her mind for something else

D. didn’t mention it in the past two months

3.The underlined word “guilty” in the 2nd paragraph means ______.

A. unhappy B. worried C. pleased D. sorry

4.Mary’s father got the idea to ______.

A. spend 5 hours working on the clay

B. make a small bike out of clay

C. paint her old bike red and white

D. put the present into box

5.From Mary’s words in the last paragraph; we know that she ______.

A. still wanted to get a real bike

B. didn’t know the meaning of the note

C. preferred a real bike to the model one

D. was greatly moved by what her father had done for her

Our trip to the Mining Museum

On Tuesday 4th April, we took a bus to travel to the Mining (礦業(yè)) Museum because we had learning about the Gold Rushes.

__1.___. We went past some famous places such as Sydney Harbor and the Open House along the way. We also chatted to our friends about what we had seen on TV last night.

When we arrived at the Mining Museum, we were taken to a room where we stored our bags. Our guide, Alison, then introduced us to a man named Bruce Binkley who is a miner.

Mr. Binkley talked to us about how people used to look for gold. __2.__ . It seemed simple. You get a pan, fill it with dirt and water and then swirl (旋動(dòng)) it around until the big stones are washed out along with other things. Gold, being heavier, is left at the bottom.

Next, we walked upstairs to look at pictures, information and samples (樣品) of gold. We filled in a worksheet about the early discoveries of gold in Australia. ___3._. That part was really exciting because you had to imagine that you were a miner digging for gold.

Lunch was spent in a nearby park. ___4.__. They were yummy! We also played hide-and-seek while we were there.

__5.___. We boarded the bus and felt very tired. Some children even slept on the bus!

It was an enjoyable trip to the Mining Museum.
