There is a famous expression in English, “Stop the world, I want to get off!” This expression means a feeling of fear or stress, which makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. Stress is feelings of worry about your work or personal life. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress leads to physical, emotional, and mental health problems.

It can lead to asthma—a medical condition that makes breathing difficult. Stress can affect the stomach. It can cause stomach aches (疼痛). These are only a few examples of illnesses resulting from stress.

Emotions are also easily affected by stress. People suffering from stress often feel worried. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress, they often overreact (過激反應(yīng)) to little problems. For example, a kind mother under a lot of stress at work may shout at her child for dropping a glass of juice.

Suffering from stress for a long time can lead to serious mental illnesses. Depression, a very strong feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of stress. Eating disorders (紊亂) are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to go on, one’s mental health is in danger.

It is clear that stress is a serious problem. It has a great influence on our health, our feelings, and our minds. So, reduce stress—stop the world and rest for a while.

Phyllis Wheatley is regarded as America’s first black poet. She was born in Senegal, Africa in about 1753 and brought to America at about the age of seven. Then in 1773 Phyllis went with Nathaniel, who was now a businessman, to London. Thirty-nine of her poems were published in London as Poems on Various Subjects. It was the first book published by a black American. In 1775 Phyllis wrote a poem about George Washington and sent it to him. He responded by praising her talents and inviting her to visit his headquarters. After both of her benefactors (恩人) died in 1777 and in 1778, Phyllis was freed. She married in 1778, moved away from Boston, and had three children. But after the unhappy marriage, she moved back to Boston, and died in poverty in 1783.
