The founder of Huawei seldom spoke to the media, while he let his company's fast growth do the talking. That's changing as Huawei finds itself in a dangerous situation in the US. Ren, 74, tells CNN in an interview that the challenges Huawei faces are just so common for him. "There are always difficulties for me. I never had smooth sailing because when I was young, my family background wasn't good. I had to work really hard to get even just a little bit of opportunity to work."

In 1974, Ren joined the PLA (中國人民解放軍) as an engineer. During that period, the country was suffering from terrible food and clothing shortages (短缺). "I had been to college, and people like me could play a role." he said. After the PLA, Ren worked for an oil company before founding Huawei in 1987. It was set up in Shenzhen, which was just a fishing village then.

To get market share, Ren suffered serious depression (抑郁) during the darkest days of the company. Ren pushed staff to work long hours and do whatever it took to save business. Unable to compete in the big cities, Huawei worked on China's small towns and villages. All the time, Ren devoted a lot to research and development, pushing Huawei to create its own technology that would make it compete with its competitors.

Ren worked long hours leaving him little time to build strong relationships with his three children. He has said that while in the PLA, he spent just one month a year with his family. After starting Huawei, "I had to spend 16 hours a day in the office," he said. He once asked his kids whether they’d like him to spend more time with the family or work to "build a platform (平臺(tái))" on which they could grow. His children chose the latter (后者).

A.Ren's children preferred to see Ren build a platform for them.

B.Ren tried to spend time with his kids although he was very busy.

分析“There are always difficulties for me. I never had smooth sailing because when I was young, my family background wasn't good.”

a. Ren built up Huawei in Shenzhen. b. America made some trouble to Huawei. c. Ren joined the army and worked as a soldier. d. Ren went to college. e. Ren worked for an oil company.

根據(jù)第三段中“All the time, Ren devoted a lot to research and development, pushing Huawei to create its own technology that would make it compete with its competitors.” 故選A。

根據(jù)最后一段中“He once asked his kids whether they’d like him to spend more time with the family or work to ‘build a platform (平臺(tái))’ on which they could grow. His children chose the latter (后者).” 故選A。

FAST is a five-hundred-metre telescope. It is also called Tian-yan (“The Eye of Heaven”), with a dish the size of 30 football grounds, deep in the mountains of south-west China’s Guizhou Province. The giant dish is built on a bowl-like valley.

Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state(狀態(tài)) of activity” In other words, whether you want life-long happiness or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve found five steps to take toward happiness.

University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 1,200 people how money, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness. Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The highest levels of happiness are found in the most stable(穩(wěn)定的) relationships. ” The new study found those who were friends of happy people had a greater chance of being happy themselves.

Singing aloud, talking to a stranger: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to the study. Participants(參與者)followed the advice for two weeks and felt happier.

The researchers also gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance. Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who spent the wealth on others felt much happier than those who spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20, suggesting that it’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it, that bring joy and satisfaction.

What’s more, Studies showed that discouraged (氣餒的) people who wrote down three good things each day for six months became happier.

Title: Steps toward happiness
