【題目】 Jeanne Johnson lives near the ocean (海洋) in the USA. She is worried about the danger of tsunamis (海嘯), so she bought a tsunami escape pod (逃生艙).

The pod is a bright orange ball. It is not very big, just 1.37 metres across. Two people can fit inside. It has a watertight (不漏水的) door and some windows. The pod can even provide air for the people inside and show where they are.

Julian Sharpe made the pod. He got the idea after a tsunami in 2004 in the Indian Ocean. It killed more than 226,000 people. He was on vacation near the ocean with his family. His kids were very young. Sharpe wondered how he could keep them safe if a tsunami happened. Then in 2011, a tsunami killed about 16,000 people in Japan. This was when Sharpe really started designing and making an escape pod strong enough to protect people from a tsunami.

Jeanne spent $13,500 on the pod. She has put some water, food, warm clothes and a radio in it. And she is practising getting into it quickly.

“The pod is really not comfortable,” said Jeanne. “But it’s better than nothing. I don’t think too much about tsunamis now. I can sleep well at night.”

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案。Pollution
Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest is pollution (污染). Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and polluted our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It's bad to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog(煙霧).
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, they mustn't blow dirty smoke into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw it on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

Moms take care of their children and dads bring home food and make the family rules. These are the roles moms and dads fall into when they become parents and it's common among all cultures. But times change and parents' roles seem to be changing, too. More women are bringing home food by having fulltime jobs and men are taking care of their children at home.
Chinese TV show Where Are We Going,Dad provides a closer look at the changing roles of dads in modern family life. The show follows the adventures (冒險(xiǎn)經(jīng)歷) of five celebrity (明星) dads who take trips with their young children (aged 4 to 6) and try to complete a set of tasks. Psychologists (心理學(xué)家) say that a strong fatherly influence is important in a child's development. Fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things. They also give them a sense of safety. A child learns that if something goes wrong,he or she can depend on dad to help fix it. The psychologists also say that without a dad,a child is more possible to drop out of school and get into trouble.

【題目】 Drriinnggg! That’s the sound children across the country do not want to hear — the alarm bell(鬧鈴). This means children across the UK have to wake up bright and early to go to school.

But students at one school in north-east England can lie in for one more hour before they go to school. Monkseaton High School says it’s OK for students to come into school an hour later than other schools.

The headmaster, Dr Paul Kelley, says that it helps students to be more active in class. He feels that young people work better later in the day and a late start may be better for their school life than an early one.

Dr Kelley told the BBC that teenagers don’t work very well in the morning and their need to sleep is biological(生物學(xué)的).

This new approach(做法) to teaching shows good results. The school has already seen a drop in the number of students playing truant(逃學(xué)) by 27%. More importantly, Dr Kelley also said that exam results have improved by 20-30% over the past year.

Lessons at Monkseaton High School begin at 10 a.m. and finish at 3.40 p.m. However, the school opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

1One of the results of starting school late is that _____.

A.students don’t do very well in examsB.students become more polite

C.students feel tired in the afternoonD.fewer students are absent(缺席) from school

2We may learn from the passage that lessons at other schools in the UK may begin at _____.
