Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘錄) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饒舌音樂) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承認(rèn)) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄氣), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
1.Why does Barack Obama mention JK Rowling and Michael Jordan in the fourth paragraph?
A. To compare (比較) these two famous persons.
B. To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.
C. To show that the two persons were treated unfairly.
D. To prove that failure is the mother of success.
2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. No one can be successful without working hard.
B. Failure can be good if you treat it in a right way.
C. Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
D. One should try his best to make his dream come true.
3.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A. One should change his mind when others give honest advice to him.
B. One should believe in himself no matter what difficulty he is faced with.
C. One doesn’t have to work hard when he has failed several times.
D. One doesn’t have to take others’ advice when they get away from him.
4.Who is JK Rowling?
A. The present’s wife
B. It may be a writer’s name.
C. A basketball player
D. Harry Potter’s mother
5. The underlined words in the paragraph4 means“ ”in Chinese.
A.拒絕 B.放下 C. 接受 D.放棄

Last year in the UK at least 45 people died and 900 more were injured(受傷的) in car accidents where drivers were using their mobile phones. Yet many people continue to use them while driving even though it' s dangerous.
Research has shown that it is difficult to concentrate on(專注于) driving and talking at the same time. It can even be more dangerous than driving after drinking too much. A recent study found that when drivers were talking on their mobile phones, their stopping times were 30 percent slower than when they had drunk too much - and nearly 50 percent slower than when they were driving normally. It also found that drivers talking on mobile phones were less able to control their cars than drunk drivers.
And talking isn't even the most serious problem, but texting is. Unbelievably, another recent study reported that 22% of adults admitted(承認(rèn)) they had sent a text message while driving at least once in the past month. An average(平均的) text message takes 90 seconds to write and send. That means for one and a half minutes a driver is looking at their phone's screen and not at the road. The arrival of new smart phones such as the iPhone will only make things worse as they will allow users to do more things than ever before.
Using a mobile phone while driving puts others' lives at risk. No matter how well we drive, if another driver is*not careful, we are put in danger by their actions. Such drivers are selfish, careless and should have their driving licenses (駕照) cancelled.
There is no doubt that mobile phones can be fun and are useful, especially when you're in trouble.
But there is no need to use them while driving. Just wait until you stop or you will probably get into trou-ble of your own.
1. The underlined word "them" in Paragraph l refers to _ .
A. phone users B. mobile phones
C. drivers D. ears
2.According to the passage ,if a driver needs 10 seconds to stop when driving normally, they will need _ _ seconds to stop when talking on a mobile phone.
A. 12 B. 13 C. 14 D. 15
3.According to the passage ,in what order do the following activities influence driving?
Dangerous→More dangerous→Most dangerous .
A. drinking→talking on phone→texting
B. texting→talking on phone→drinking
C. talking on phone→drinking-→texting
D. drinking→texting→talking on phone
4. Why will new types of mobile phones make the driving problem worse?
A. It will take longer to send text messages.
B. People will want to talk on their phones more often.
C. There will be more things for people to do with their phones.
D. People think the new phones are easier and safer to use.
