【題目】In the sea there are many islands. In its warm waters there are some little ones. We call them “coral Islands” (珊瑚島).

A coral island is very nice to look at. It looks like a ring of land(一圈陸地) with trees, grass, and flowers on it. One part of the ring is open to the water. There is a little round lake inside the island.

If you look into this lake, you will see beautiful coral. You may think they are flowers. If you look at a piece of coral, you will see many little holes in it. In each of these holes a very small sea animal lives. These sea animals make the coral.

They began to build under the water. Year after year, the coral grew higher and higher. At last it grew out of the water.

Then the sea brought it small trees and something else. After some years, these things changed into earth. Sometimes the wind brought seeds(種子) to this earth. Sometimes birds flew over it and brought seeds to the island.

The little seeds grew. In a few years there were plants all over the island. In a few more years there were trees growing there.

So you see, these islands were built little by little. The workers were very small. Do they not teach us a lesson? Can you think what the lesson is?

"Olyvia, love is simple. You don't have to do much to make someone happy." That was what my mother said to me when I was a child. Over a year ago, I had a chance. My good friend Kaylee told me about her t1 to a small town called Gary, and how it was a life—changing experience. I made up my mind to go there m2 .

When I told my parents about the decision, they didn't a3 at first. They said I didn't know much about the place. They were worried that it was not s4 for me to go there. Thankfully, after I explained my plan to them in detail, they said yes.

When our group arrived in Gary, I noticed how different the town was from where I lived. There were few stores or restaurants in the town; most had closed. So you would be very l5 if you could find a place to buy food or drinks. H6 were built on small hills. Many of them had broken doors or windows. My job was to help the local people to r7 houses. The children there were also different. They seemed to enjoy every moment in life t8 they were poor. The smallest things would make these kids happy. I couldn't find words to describe their joy when they r9 an ice-cream, a ball or even a kiss. The community was like a big family. Everyone knew each other and was there when someone needed help.

I am so glad that I had this unforgettable experience. I t10 learned the meaning of what my mother said. You don't need to do much to make a difference to others' lives.

【題目】 Robert and Henry were going home from school, when they were at the corner of a street, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!” “No,” said Henry, “Let us go quietly home and not get in the middle of this fight. We have nothing to do with it, and we may get into trouble.” “ You are a coward (膽小鬼), and afraid to go.” said Robert, and he ran away.

Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon he went to school, as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal.

Henry had learned, however, that true courage is shown in something else, and he should be afraid of nothing but doing wrong.

After few days, Robert was bathing with some schoolmates in the river. All of a sudden, he fell down and couldn’t manage to stand up. He struggled, and cried for help, but all in vain.

The boys who had called Henry a coward, got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Robert was fast sinking (下沉), when Henry threw off his clothes, and jumped into the water. He reached Robert just as he was sinking the last time.

By great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the bank, and saved his life.

Robert and his schoolmates were sorry about having called Henry a coward. They knew he had more courage than any of them.

Why do we always say things we later wish we could take back, and why do we only say the things we wish to say when it's too l1 ?

I often think of things I wish I had told my mother. I spent the l2 few days of her life at her bedside telling her the things I'd wanted to tell her for years, that she was a good mother and I was proud to be her d3 .

My dad was also a man of few words, but he m4 what he said. He always ended our calls with "Love you, girl."

Those were the words I would cling to when I learned he had died. I had all sorts of questions I never asked him, b5 I never doubted his love.

Now, I have children and grandchildren of my own, and it seems like my husband and I are forever telling them how m6 they mean to us. They might get sick of it, but we'll n7 stop-we need to say it and they need to hear it. From late December to mid-February, we celebrate 11 b8 in our big family. Last week, for example, we phoned my youngest son to wish him happy birthday.

I listened as my husband told our son how proud he is of the man and h9 and father that he's become, and what a pleasure it has been watching him grow up.

He ended the call, as always, with "I love you, buddy."

And I shouted, "Me, too! " I hope he h10 me.

When we tell someone what they mean to us, we just need to mean it and make sure they hear it.

The best time to say "I love you" is always right now.
