Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (pocket money). The purpose is to let children learn from experiences at an age when financial (財(cái)務(wù)的) mistakes are not very costly.
How much money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish is quite different from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance.
In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget (預(yù)算). Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget requires a choice between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.
Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your children for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do other work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.
Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.
Saving helps children understand that costly goals sometimes need to give up something. You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowances can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance. A saving account (賬戶) is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest (復(fù)利息).
Compounding works by paying interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will get two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot, but over time it adds up.

閱讀下列短文, 從每小題的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中選出最佳選項(xiàng)。
One day a man found a cocoon(蠶) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly, a small opening appeared and the butterfly made its great effort(努力) to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.(那個(gè)蛹好象忘記了它該怎樣做, 也好象停止了掙扎).
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly would come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.
The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬) around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.
The man was in his kindness, but he didn’t understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(液體) from its body must be forced into its wings, and then would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle(拼搏) to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been, we could never fly.

D. stop the butterfly growing bigger
3. What do you think of the man?

They decided to knock down their living room wall to open up the space. When the wooden walls were removed, they were shocked to find a lizard stuck in the small space between the walls. The lizard’s foot was stuck(插入) by a nail, which was hammered(釘) from the other side of the wall.
Mrs White reminded him that they hammered a nail to hang up their kids photo. However, they questioned how the lizard had stayed alive so long without moving from that place. So Mr White stopped his work and watched the lizard: what has it been doing? What and how has it been eating?
