  My respecting teacher

I always thought that a man who was wise (睿智的) and good would become rich, but this year I have learned that this is not always true. I learned this from my teacher. He is both wise and good, but is not rich at all, for being a teacher, he doesn't have a good income. He may be able to get more money if he gives up teaching for business. But he is so proud of being a teacher that he takes pleasure in helping young people. He stays at school from morning till late afternoon and works very hard. He always smiles at us when we go to ask him for help. He is kinder to us than anyone whom I've ever known. I think it must be easier to learn history or maths than to learn how to become such a man. He scolds (責(zé)備) us when we do something wrong, but it teaches us to try to do better. We all wish to study with him as long as possible, but that may be impossible. Some of us may become doctors, some be come businessmen, some become engineers, some become writers, but we all want one thing very much to become men like our teacher.

(1) The writer always thought that ________.

[ ]

A. a wise and good person would never become rich

B. a wise and good person would become rich

C. a wise teacher would become rich

D. a good teacher would never become rich at all

(2) The writer's teacher is the following except that ________.

[ ]

A. He is the kindest person I know.

B. He is kinder than many people I know.

C. I know many people who are kinder than he.

D. Only a few people are kinder than he.

(4) From this passage, we know that the writer ________.

[ ]

A. is now working
B. is now still a student
C. is now a doctor
D. is now also a teacher

(5) Which is NOT TRUE according to (根據(jù)) this passage?

[ ]

B. The writer may become a teacher in the future, too.

C. It's very easy to be a wise and good teacher.

Ever since we became pen pals, Julien has sent me strange things. Once, she sent her sneeze in a jar. ("I
have a cold, can you tell?" she wrote. ) Then she sent her fingerprint. ( "So you'll recognize me in a crowd.")
Julien sent me breakfast, all right: cornflakes. Soggy, milky, grainy, crumbly, limp cornflakes scraped from
the bottom of her cereal bowl. I lost my appetite, but I read the letter.
Dear Caitlin,
These cornflakes were so nutritious that, wanted to share this high-fiber, low-sodium,
 just-three-calories, balanced breakfast with you.
       Enjoy,
      Julien
      P. S. Next week I'm sending you a sunset,
"She's mistaken," I told my mom. " No one can send a sunset, not even Julien. It's impossible."
"I don't know," Mom said."Julien might find a way. After all, she did send you her sneeze.
A week later I checked the mail and found a box with air holes and the words "FRAGILE-THIS SIDE UP"
printed in bold black letters on the top. It was from Julien.
I stroked the box with my fingers. It was perfectly dry. I smelled it. It didn't smell. I held my breath and
started opening the package. What if sunbeams spring out and hit me in the face like those fake snakes in a
can; I thought?
My hands shook as I lifted the last flap and peeked inside. Where in the world was the sunset? All I could
find was a letter and a twisty, gray, papery shell. It looked like a submarine. I read the letter.
Dear Caitlin,
The sunsets at my house are so beautiful that I had to give you a piece. I counted at least
five different colors in one yesterday. Can you find more?
    Hugs and smoochies,
    Julien
I looked again at the gray shell. That's no sunset, I thought. "You must mean the submarines at your house,
Julien," I said. Without reading the postscript, I laid the letter and the submarine on the kitchen table. Then I
left the room to find a pen so that I could cross out "sun-set" and write "submarine" above it.
When I returned, I stared in shock at the submarine. A creature was oozing out of it! Was it a sea monster?
I looked closer. It was a winged creature... an insect... a butterfly. An orange, blue, purple, red, and gold
butterfly. It looked like... a sunset!
While the sunset opened and closed its wings to dry them, I read Julien's postscript. It said, "P. S. Next
week I'm sending you Japan."
1. What does the underlined word "oozing" probably mean?
A. moving
B. jumping
C. swimming
D. flying
2. What did Julien really want Caitlin to see in the fourth mail?
A. The setting sun.
B. Colors of a sunset.
C. A colorful butterfly.
D. A new submarine.
3. We can learn from the passage that Julien was ______.
A. strange and clever
B. honest and friendly
C. creative and giving
D. funny and inventive
4. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Caitlin was from Japan and had never seen Julien.
B. Caitlin's mom thought Julien's gifts were fantastic.
C. Caitlin was pleased with the cornflakes that Julien sent.
D. Caitlin was expecting another unusual gift from Julien.

Ever thought of moving to a new country? How about starting a new country? Patri Friedman is
planning to do just that. He left Google years ago to set up the Seasteading Institute. And his dream is
to build seasteads-----floating micro-nations in the middle of the ocean.
So, what will life on a seastead be like? Probably a bit like life on a cruise liner ( 游輪), but much
larger, with shops , gyms , swimming pools, schools and other areas. In fact , the early seasteads may
actually be specially-rebuilt cruise liners. But as science advances, Friedman believes they’ll become
more like floating cities, with several hundred people.
Seasteading raises a lot of questions . First of all , how will the new countries make money? The
Seasteading Institute has suggested several money-making ideas, including ocean-based theme parks,
casinos ( 賭場(chǎng)) and fish farming. There’s also the questions of safety. With storms, typhoons and pirates( 海盜) , the high seas are a dangerous place. However, the Institute says that it can stand bad weather
and prevent crimes with its well-designed systems.
So, is this just a day dream? Well, maybe not. One of the people behind the project is Peter Thiel.
He founded PayPal and was one of the first investors (投資者) in Facebook. So far , he’s donated $
500,000 to the project.
And Friedman isn’t wasting any time . He recently announced the creation of the Poseidon Award.
This will be given to the first seastead with fifty people. Friedman is hoping to hand out the award in
2015.
1. Where did Friedman use to work?
A. In Facebook.
B. In Seastead Institute .
C. In PayPal.
D. In Google.
2. A future seastead may be most likely to look like ___________________.
A. a cruise liner
B. a floating city
C. a theme park
D. a fishing farm
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Friedman is planning to move to a new country.
B. Friedman is worried about the safety of seasteads.
C. Friedman has got some supporters for his project.
D. Friedman has already won the Poseidon Award.
4.Which of the following can be the best titles of this passage?
A. Seasteading: a new idea of living
B. Seasteading : a wild way of farming
C. Peter Thiel : a man behind the project
D. Patri Friedman: a crazy day dreamer
