The Blood Group Alphabet
Sometimes people lose too much blood from injuries or accidents. To save their lives, doctors must replace the lost blood. In an operation called a transfusion, doctors put blood given by healthy people into the veins(靜脈)of the sick or injured person. But they must be careful. Although all blood looks the same, there are really different types of blood. Someone getting the wrong type of blood in a transfusion may become very sick or even die.
All blood is made up of red and white cells, and a liquid(液體)called plasma(血漿). It is the red cells that cause blood to be different types. On the outside of the red cells of some people's blood are proteins(蛋白質(zhì)). Doctors group these proteins into two different classes, A and B. People with the A protein have Type A blood, while people with the B protein have B type blood. If someone happens to have both proteins, that person has Type AB blood. Some people don't have either protein, and their blood is called Type O.
If a person receives a transfusion of the wrong type of blood, the body senses the strange protein on the new blood cells. So the body destroys the new blood, and the patient goes into shock. For example, people with Type A blood will become very sick if they are given Type B protein because their bodies try to destroy the strange Type B protein. People with Type O blood have no proteins on their cells, so their bodies will destroy both Type A and Type B blood. They can only receive Type O blood. But people with Type AB blood have both proteins, so they can receive Type A, Type B and Type AB blood. These people are called Universal Receivers. People of any type can receive Type O blood because it has no protein for the body to fight against. So Type O people are called Universal Donors.
Doctors are always careful to test blood for its type before it is used in a transfusion. Although the wrong type of blood can be harmful, the right type can save a life.

【題目】
I am Turere. I come from Kitengela, a farming community on the edge (邊緣) of Nairobi National Park of Kenya (肯尼亞). Since the age of nine, I have helped to look after my family’s cows. As a child, in my free time, I enjoyed playing with electronics. I made my own inventions, such as electronics toys from car parts and other things. I also built other electronic devices (儀器) for my neighbors.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. It also changed the lives of many people in my community. One night, a lion from the park came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. However, killing the lion, I thought, was not the best way to solve the problem. Instead, I decided to invent a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought lions were scared of fire. But I came to realize that didn't really help, because it was even helping the lions to see through the cowshed (牛棚). So I didn't give up. I continued.
And a second idea I got was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lions into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But lions are very clever. They will come the first day and they see the scarecrow, and they go back. But the second day, they'll come and they say, this thing is not moving here, it is always here! So he jumps in and kills the animal.
So one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch (手電筒), and that day the lions didn’t come. And I discovered that lions were afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea ...

Stay Home Studying
17-year-old Liu Yu was a high school student in China. She planned to go back to school on Feb 17 to prepare for the 2020 college entrance examination(高考). However, the Ministry of Education(教育部)told people in late January that the spring term for all schools would be put off because of the serious disease(疾。in China. So Liu Yu, like all the others students, had to stay at home.
However, Liu and her classmates didn’t fell behind their plans and began studying full-time again – only from home. It may have become the largest online teaching experiment the country has ever seen.
To go with students’ new learning environment, a “cloud platform(云平臺)” was started using on Feb 17. It provided students with education resources(資源) covering all school subjects. But some students had difficulty going to the website or using smart phones. A TV channel by China Education Television started airing classes on Feb 17. So students could have classes and study online or on TV at home.
But the online platform and TV channel don’t just offer school knowledge. Students can also learn how to protect themselves from the disease and psychological(心理的)health during this period, according to the Ministry of Education.
For some students, the chance to study from home has had some unexpected benefits. Yuan Siyi, who lives in Hubei province, used to get up before 6 am on school days, but since starting online courses, she got more hours of sleep every morning. “I like online teaching because I have more freedom at home,” Yuan told TEENS. She began her all-day courses on Feb 3.
However, online teaching and learning has its weaknesses compared to studying in a traditional classroom. “My motivation(動力)to study is stronger when my classmates are around me and all working very hard,” Yuan said.
According to the Ministry of Education, online courses are just a short-time way of learning during the disease. When the new term begins, schools will no longer use online classes instead of classroom teaching.
【1】When did Liu Yu plan to go back to school?
【2】Did Liu Yu begin her full-time study from home?
【3】How did students have classes and study at home?
【4】What can students learn except school knowledge during this period?
