【題目】Butterflies at Risk
What's causing problems for these beautiful insects?
Something is harming the monarchs. One of the largest butterflies in North America, monarchs are famous for their long migrations(遷徙)covering thousands of miles. Yet the number of monarchs is dropping. Bad weather conditions, putting the butterfly population in danger. Some butterfly experts say that the number of monarch butterflies has been cut by 25 percent. In recent years, unusually cold temperatures and rain have caused monarchs to die in large numbers. These conditions have also caused new butterflies not to hatch(孵化).
Will they return?
Monarchs are very sensitive(敏感的)to change because of the long distances they travel. They cover thousands of miles each year, flying between their winter homes in Mexico or Southern California and their summer homes in the Midwest. Other animals also migrate. And many travel much farther. A bird called the Arctic tern goes round trip between the Arctic and the Antarctic every year. Like the Arctic tern, a type of gray whale has a long migration. It travels 12,400 miles from Baia California in Mexico to waters off Alaska and back. The longest migration ever recorded is by the sooty shearwater. Every year this bird flies 40, 000 miles from New Zealand to the northern part of the Pacific Ocean to find food.
The monarchs don't travel as far as animals like the Arctic tern and the sooty shearwater, but their journey isn't safe. Every year as many as 100 million monarch butterflies leave Mexico for the first leg of the migration. It's hard to imagine that such a large number might be in danger. Yet many scientists tell us that the danger is very real.
In Mexico people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down the trees where millions of monarchs. spend the winter and use chemicals to kill the milkweed, the monarch's favourite food. Monarchs spend the winter in Mexico and California. In both places, development is destroying these winter homes. Unless steps are taken to protect their habitats, the monarchs' migration could become a thing of the past.
"If we lose the whole migration, we lose one of the nation's most magnificent phenomena, " said Chip Taylor, a professor at the University of Kansas. These butterflies are the symbol of richness of biological diversity(生物多樣性).
【1】Are monarch butterflies famous for their long migrations?
【2】What are putting the butterfly population in danger?
【3】Where are monarchs' winter homes?
【4】In Paragraph 2, what animal has the longest migration?
【5】What can people do to protect monarch butterflies?

【題目】
Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device (裝置) which uses satellites (衛(wèi)星) to find the user’s position (位置). It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.
GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.
There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting(環(huán)繞…運行) the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.
Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate. Also there will be new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost anywhere.
【1】GPS can help you find your position, can’t it?
【2】What does a GPS look like?
【3】How many things are mentioned that GPS devices can be put into?
【4】Why do some people think GPS devices will be popular in the future?
【5】What is the use of ground stations?
【6】What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?

【題目】
How Can You Fight colds?
People usually catch a cold in the spring time and fall. It makes us question: if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can’t they find a treatment for the common cold? The answer is easy. There are hundreds of kinds of cold viruses(病毒) out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a treatment for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood(血液) rushes into your nose and brings congestion(堵塞) with it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but in fact your body is “eating” the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat(高溫) of your body is beating the virus. You might also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells(細胞). You may feel awful, but in fact your wonderful body is doing everything it can to beat the cold.
Different people have different ways to fight colds. In Canada and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm drinks. Other people take medicines to stop the fever, congestion and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note — some scientists believe that taking medicines when you have a cold is really bad for you. We know that bodies can do a great job on their own. Taking medicine can make the virus stay in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and beat it. There is a joke on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine.
【1】When having a cold, your body can eat the virus while ________ .
A.having congestion in the noseB.taking enough medicines
C.going to see a doctorD.drinking cold drinks
【2】According to the passage, the writer may agree that ________ .
A.eating chicken soup is the best way to treat colds in Canada
B.the virus will stay in your body shorter if you take medicine
C.having a runny nose means your cold is getting more and more serious
D.feeling bad while having a cold probably means your body is doing a good job
【3】The joke at the end of the passage means taking medicine ________.
A.is better than not taking itB.is really bad for your health
C.needs longer time to get wellD.is the same with no medicine
