Emily was an eighth grader. To pass her Civics course, she had to do some volunteer services in a nursing home for a week.
One Monday, Emily went to the nursing home after school. When she arrived, she was told she would spent an hour every weekday with an elderly lady, Mrs. Blair. She was then led into a room, where an old lady in a flowery dress was sitting on a sofa.
Emily stood awkwardly(別扭地)in front of the lady. She cleared her throat and said, “Good afternoon I’m Emily.”
“Good afternoon, Emily. Take a seat, please.” Mrs. Blair replied.
Then, _______ filled the space between them. Emily wondered what to say.
“Tell me about yourself, Emily,” Mrs. Blair said suddenly.
“Well,” Emily started, “I don’t have any grandparents, so I don’t know how to get on well with elderly people. I love the performing arts. I’m here mainly because I have to volunteer here to get a good grade for my Civics class.”
Mrs. Blair didn’t seem to mind. “Many people, especially teens, don’t seem to _______ old people like me. Now you are here, and I’m going to change that about you. Ask me anything.”
Emily thought for a moment, and finally decided, “What was your job?”
“I was a Broadway star in the 1950s.” Mrs. Blair answered.
“Cool! Can you tell me about it!” Emily asked, amazed.
Mrs. Blair smiled. “Back then, _______ the lead actress had the honor to wear a special bracelet. I was the lead in almost all of the plays, so I always wore the bracelet. Till this day, I still have it.”
Emily smiled along with Mrs. Blair and listened to the other stories, attentively. She had become very _______ Mrs. Blair’s stories. She decided to come earlier the next day.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday passed by quickly. Then came Friday. As she was leaving, Emily was really upset to say goodbye.
“Don’t be sad. You can still visit me,” Mrs. Blair comforted her. She then handed a small box to Emily, “It’s my gift to you.”
Emily _______ opened the box and was surprised to see what was inside. “It’s the bracelet that you wore. Thank you!” Emily said, with tears in her eyes. “I’m sure to visit you whenever I’m free.”
On the way home, Emily thought of her own love for the performing arts. She touched the bracelet and_______ that she would keep her word to Mrs. Blair.

It’s a long-awaited (期待已久) day for China. The navy now has its first aircraft carrier(航空母艦), Liaoning. It’s a unique experience to get to know the life in the carrier. The carrier is just like a small city on the sea. It has all the functions for daily life. There are 4 words to sum up its characters: big, small, much and high. The carrier Liaoning is such a huge one that the total length of the whole corridor(過(guò)道)could reach over 20 kilometers. But the living space for the sailors is quite small. That’s because the carrier is designed for researching purposes, rather than comfortable living. Over 1,000 sailors, both men and women, are living on board. They are arranged among over 3,000 tiny rooms below the deck. For visitors, it’s so easy to get lost. So the first thing the new sailors have to learn is their way around. The number of female sailors is much smaller than that of the males, taking about 5 percent of the total. But they play a key role in carrying out some special missions.
Also, you will be surprised by the high level of education of today’s sailors. The captain said that over 90 percent of the sailors are college graduates. Six hold Doctor’s Degrees and 45 have a Master’s. The whole team is young but vigorous (精力充沛的). The complex work on the carrier requires high management abilities for the commanders on board.
1.Why do we visitors get lost easily inside the carrier?
A. Because they don’t have a map.
B. Because the living space is quite small.
C. Because there are too many corridors for rooms.
D. Because the corridor inside the carrier is too long.
2.What does the word “high” in Line 4 refer to(指代)?
A. The aircraft carrier is high since it is just like a small city.
B. Most of the soldiers received good education.
C. The expense(花費(fèi))to run a carrier is high.
D. The high-level of their training.
3.The number of female sailors is about ________.
A. 50 B. 150 C. 200 D. 600
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. There are more women sailors than men sailors on the carrier.
B. Most of the sailors on the carrier hold Doctor’s Degrees.
C. Liaoning is our country’s first aircraft carrier.
D. It is comfortable for the sailors to live in the carrier.
