We’ve probably all met someone who likes to show off about where he or she has been. To some people, traveling is all about how many places one has been to. But luckily, the old “been there, seen that” mode is changing.

Last year’s travel trend (趨勢(shì)) was “experiential travel”. This is where tourists look for ways to get to know local culture and meet local people so they feel less like an outsider.

So what about this year? Can creative tourists get even more out of their traveling experience?

Transformative travel

Transformative (起改變作用的) travel is much like “experiential travel”, but takes it a step further.

It usually goes through three steps – you go to a place that has a very different background from where you live, you learn wisdom from the new culture and the people you meet, and finally you go back home and use the knowledge in your own lives. This last step is how the “transformation” is completed and what separates transformative travel from experiential travel.

Go green

One way to plan a green trip is to travel a shorter distance, which can reduce your carbon footprint (碳排放量). “One trans-Atlantic flight equals a year’s worth of driving, so taking a trip in this way can help protect the environment,” suggested Warren, according to US News.

Another way to go green in your travel plans is to choose a place that will be helped most from your trip. For example, places like Nepal will enjoy an increase in its local economy (經(jīng)濟(jì)) through the trip.

Disappearing sights

Some sights at risk of disappearing are also welcoming an increasing number of tourists.

Everett Potter, a USA Today writer, says that the Arctic and Antarctic have attracted more and more tourists since they are being greatly influenced by climate (氣候) change.

Another top sight is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It’s believed that the reef will be seriously harmed in just a few years because of pollution and global warming. Travelers look forward to seeing the coral (珊瑚) “before it’s gone or completely changed”, Potter told US News.

The changing travel trends

Before

To some people, traveling means the 1. of places they have been to.

Last year

Experiential travel

Tourists look for ways to better understand the local culture so they can be 2. like local people.

This year

Transformative travel

● Going to a place with a different background.

● Learning wisdom from the new culture and people.

3. home and using the knowledge in your own lives.

Go green

● One way is to travel 4. to your home. It can reduce

your carbon footprint.

● Another way is to choose a place which will get the most

help through the trip.

Disappearing sights

● The Arctic and Antarctic have become more and more

5. because of climate change.

● Travelers expect to see the coral before it is gone

or completely changed.

Experts hope an experimental drug can be as effective against the novel coronavirus in people as it has been on cells in a controlled lab environment.

The US drug, remdesivir (瑞德西韋), began clinical trials(臨床試驗(yàn))on patients in Wuhan, Hubei province on Thursday. Other medications, including chloroquine, arbidol and darunavir have also recently been found capable of arresting viral growth in lab cells, but like remdesivir, they require more clinical trials to confirm their safety and potency on humans.

The Phase III trials for remdesivir have been approved by China’s National Medical Products Administration and is conducted by the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences on patients at the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital.

“A total of 761 patients will participate in two trials-one trial to assess the drugs' potency on 308 cases with mild or moderate infection, and the other on 453 severely infected patients”, Cao Bin, head of the clinical trial and vice-president of the friendship hospital, said on Wednesday.

Cao said studies have shown remdesivir is effective in inhibiting the growth of the novel coronavirus in vitro(在生物體外), meaning the procedure was done on cells in a controlled environment outside of a living organism, typically in a petri dish or test tube.

But the drug has yet to show convincing clinical evidence that it can translate its positive in vitro results into actual human patients. So, it will require strict clinical testing, Cao said.

A 35-year-old patient from the United States infected with the virus was reported seeing noticeable improvement with no obvious side effects after taking the drug, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Gilead Sciences, the maker of remdesivir, said in a recent statement that it has been working with government agencies on the novel coronavirus response efforts.

However, the company stressed that remdesivir is an experimental medicine that has only been used in a handful of patients, “so we do not have an appropriately full understanding of the effect of this drug ”.

1.Why does the US drug, remdesivir, began clinical trials?

A.To replace the traditional medicine.

B.To confirm their safety and potency on humans.

C.To show whether remdesivir is effective in inhibiting the growth of the novel coronavirus in vitro.

D.To see how it takes effect.

2.What is true according to the passage?

A.After taking the drug, a 35-year-old patient was infected with the virus.

B.Doctors had seen noticeable success treating a 35-year-old patient infected with the virus.

C.Remdesivir can cure those who are infected with the novel coronavirus.

D.Chinese Hospital does The Phase III trials independently.

3.What’s the author's attitude towards the clinical trial of remdesivir?

A.Negative. B.Critical. C.Positive. D.Gloomy.

4.Where is this text most likely from?

A.A diary. B.A guidebook. C.A novel. D.A magazine.

The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US. It crossed New York State(州)from Buffalo on Lake Eric to Albany on the Hudson River. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

Over the canal industrial goods(工業(yè)產(chǎn)品)could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation's larges city.

The building of the canal was paid for completely by the state of New York. It cost $7,143,789, but it soon gained its price many times over. Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(過(guò)運(yùn)河費(fèi))were stopped, the state collected $121,461,891.

For a hundred years before the Erie Canal was built, people had been talking about a canal to join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. At that time some people laughingly called it "Clinton's Ditch(溝)". Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it. He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful.

Clinton became governor of New York State in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4,1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome of New York State. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast. The length of the canal is 363 miles.
