I was waiting for a phone call from my agent last night. He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn't care about my work, and he didn't care about me. That thought beat me. I started to shout at the phone, "Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?"

At that time I didn't realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, took away the phone and pulled the lines out of the phone, and shouted at the phone, "Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone!" And she swept it into the wastebasket.

I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth...?

She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, "Now hear this! All objects in this room - if you do anything to upset my husband, out you go!"

Then she turned to me, kissed me, and said quietly, "Dear, you just have to learn how to take control." With that, she left the room.

After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight, I noticed that something in my feelings had changed. I was laughing. How could I have trouble with that phone?

Her unusual actions helped me realize I had been driven crazy by small things. Twenty minutes later my agent did call. I was able to listen to him and talk to him quietly.

A. He was mad at the telephone.

B. He was worried about his wife.

2.What did the writer's wife do after she heard his shouting?

A.She said nothing. B. She threw the phone away.

C. She shouted at him. D. She called the agent.

3.What made the writer laugh?

B. His own behavior.

C. His changeable feelings.

D. His wife's suggestion.

One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane (車道) when, suddenly, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire (輪胎) made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the black of the other car.

I was frightened. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling(吼叫) at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital. ”

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Rubbish Truck (垃圾車法則) . ” He explained that many people are like rubbish trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger and full of bad feelings. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods (情緒). Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray(祈禱) for those who don’t.

1.A car accident nearly happened on the writer’s way to the ______.

A. bus station B. his home C. t rain station D. airport

2.Why did the guy get angry so easily?

A. Because he was badly hurt by the taxi.

B. Because the taxi driver didn’t say sorry to him.

C. Because he was in a bad mood.

D. Because the taxi driver just smiled.

3.From the passage, we can tell that the taxi driver is ____.

A. silly and dishonest B. wise and friendly

C. helpful but nervous D. modest but impatient

4.The underlined word “frightened” in the second paragraph means ____ in Chinese.

A. 激動的 B. 悲傷的 C. 高興的 D. 受驚的

5.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A. Many people like rubbish trucks.

B. Make friends with people like rubbish trucks

C. Don’t let rubbish trucks chang e our moods.

D. Fight with people like rubbish trucks.

Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do, be and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow yourself to make your life happen.

Successful and happy people imagine how their life should be and they set lots of goals. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it in this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind(her goal) which is laid out for her on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver. But she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?

Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't difficult to set, and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals really are. You are the one who must decide what to achieve and at what direction to aim your life.

Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly(有規(guī)律地), and have more power. Like a contract(合同)with yourself, they are harder to forget. Also when you write your goals in a specific way you are able to make yourself always aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goals.

1.The writer gave the example of two drivers to show .

A. the importance of setting goals

B. the foolishness of the second driver

C. the importance of having a map

D. the foolishness of the first driver

B. have a clear understanding of what he or she wants in life

C. let others help him or her to make his or her dream come true

D. let others understand him or her first, then work with him or her

3.According to the article, successful people are different from unsuccessful ones because ·

A. the unsuccessful people always set unrealistic plans for themselves

B. the unsuccessful people make plans for everything but can not work hard

C. the successful people set goals for everything and can get help from others

D. the successful people set goals in their lives and make plans to carry it out

4.According to the article, if you want to succeed, you must .

A. study hard B. have a goal and achieve it

C. live happily D. experience everything
