The message was short. I read it three times: “Hey, Mom, can I come to see you?” I wrote back: “Yes!” He said he hoped to make it in time for dinner.

I made a quick run to the market, put sheets on the guest bed and set the TV to record the Warriors’ game, so if traffic was awful, he wouldn’t have to miss the first half. Then I began cooking, cleaning, watching the clock and listening for his footsteps coming up the walk.

It’s called waiting. I’m good at it. When he was a newborn, I’d wait for him to go to sleep. Soon then I’d stand by his bed waiting for him to wake up. I waited, as he learned to do things like walking, talking and feeding himself; throwing a ball, riding a bike and reading a book.

I waited for him to start preschool, primary school, middle school and college.

I waited with dread for him to start driving. And I waited up every time he came home late.

I wait for my son to grow up, but that doesn’t mean the waiting game is over. It never really ends.

Mothers wait for all kinds of reasons—good news or bad, happiness or heartache. But the waiting is soon forgotten, usually, the minute a long awaited child walks through the door.

My boy will be here soon. But if he’s late, I can wait. I’m good at it. And he’s worth(值得) it. I will always leave a light on for him.

a. Shopping. b. Cooking.

2.What does the underlined word “dread” mean?

A. 激動(dòng) B. 驕傲 C. 厭惡 D. 害怕

3.Which of the following about the writer is TRUE according to the article?

B. She has experienced all kinds of feelings while waiting for her son to do things.

C. When her son went to college, her waiting ended.

D. Waiting for her son is often boring, but once her son arrives she forgets about it.

4.Which do you think would be the best title for the reading?

A. Worth waiting for

B. Being patient is difficult

C. Learn to be a mother

D. Visit your mother often

Emily and Alex were happy when their family moved to a house with a very big garden. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds. Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise (碰撞聲) on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass.

During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows?” they wondered. Finally they found out the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection(反射) of the garden.

It's Really a Miracle(奇跡)

Mr. Clarke works in New York and brought his family to China. They visited many places of interest and had a good time here. Before they left for Shanghai, the Clarkes climbed up the Great Wall. It was the greatest project about three thousand years ago. They took a lot of photos there and then they had a picnic under a big tree. Suddenly it began to rain and they hurried to the car. And when they returned to the hotel, they couldn't find the bag in which their expensive camera was. They were all sorry for it. They could buy another camera but had no time to go to the Great Wall again. They could not miss the plane!

That evening they didn't have supper. Mr. Clarke hoped to make them happy and said, “Well. Let me tell you a story. An old man lived in a sixty-storey building. One day he fell down from it when he was cleaning the window. But he didn't hurt himself. ”

“It was a miracle!” called out his children. “Why?”

“Because he lived on the first floor!”

They all began to laugh while two policemen with a bag came in. They said a Chinese boy found it under the big tree and he asked them to find out who lost it.“It's really a miracle!” the Clarkes said happily.
