An old man was in a bank. He was arguing 1 how much money he had in the bank. 2 he was arguing, a young man came into the bank and said to the old man, "I've just come from your son. He gave me a letter and this piece of silver for you."
He then gave the silver to the old man. Because the old man had weak eyes-he asked the banker to read him his son's letter.
The banker read," I have 3 you a piece of silver that weighs 4 kilos."
The old man was very 4 and asked the banker to give him some dollars for his silver. But when the banker weighed the silver, he 5 that it weighed 5 kilos.
"The old man will never know," he thought. So he only gave him dollars for 4 kilos of silver.
Later the banker examined the silver 6 and discovered that it was not silver. It was tin(錫). 7 he ran after the old man and shouted, "You have 8 me. You gave me tin, 9 silver."
The old man then asked the banker to weigh the piece of tin. It weighed 5 kilos.
"I am not robbing you, "said the old man. "You are trying to rob me! The piece of silver I gave you 10 weighed 4 kilos!"
(1)A.with B.against C.about D.for
(2)A.Where B.While C.Why D.For
(3)A.gave B.posted C.passed D.sent
(4)A.happy B.sad C.surprised D.surprised
(5)A.know B.find C.thought D.found
(6)A.close B.closely C.careful D.clear
(7)A.Excitedly B.Noisily C.Angrily D.Happily
(8)A.stolen B.hurt C.robbed D.wrong
(9)A.not B.instead C.no D.and
(10)A.even B.yet C.still D.only

【答案】(1)、C
(2)、B
(3)、D
(4)、A
(5)、D
(6)、B
(7)、C
(8)、C
(9)、A
(10)、D

(1)C about意為“關(guān)于”;with后面跟“吵”的對象;for表示目的;against意為“反對”。
(2)B when和while都表示“當……時”. 但后面用的是過去進行時,所以用while,不用when。
(3)D 由前文“He gave me a letter and this piece of silver for you. ”可知,他兒子寄給了他銀子。
(4)A 由上下文可知. 這位老人的兒子寄給了他一塊銀子,只能是happy。
(5)D 由“……when the banker weighed the silver……”
(8)C 前面有have. 由下文“I am not robbing you”可知選C。
(9)A instead作副詞.
(10)D even意為“恰好”;yet意為“仍然”;still意為“還是”;only意為“僅僅”。

There is an old saying in English, “Laughter is the best medicine”. Until recently, few people took the saying very seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to study laughter and the effects (作用) it has on the human body. They have found evidence that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be helpful.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to make the effect of pain on the body less. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group which could bear the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can make pain less seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins (內(nèi)啡肽) in the brain. These are natural chemicals which make both stress and pain less.

There is also some evidence to suggest that laughter helps the body’s immune system that is the system which fights infection (感染). In an experiment, one group of students watched a funny video while another group served as the control group in other words, a group with which to compare the first group. Doctors checked the blood of the students in both groups and found that the people in the group that watched the video had an increase in the activity of their white blood cells the cells which fight infection.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists (精神病專家) in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce good effects similar to those caused by laughter.

A. is good for one’s health
