It's not WASTE until it is WASTED!

With the World Environment Day coming, our school is now requiring every student to form a habit of sorting the waste. Here in our schoolyard we lay four different colors of rubbish bins for different kinds of rubbish. The red is for harmful waste; the blue is for waste that can be recycled (循環(huán)再用); the green is for kitchen waste; the yellow is for other waste.

The followings are some instructions for you.
Glass: Empty bottles without caps can be recycled to make new glass bottles.
Warning: Mirrors and light bulbs (電燈泡) must not be included in the glass waste.
Paper: Newspapers, magazines, boxes must be clean enough to be recycled.
Warning: Paper tissues (餐紙) and wall paper are not recyclable as paper and should be kept separately.
PMD waste: Packaging made of Plastic or Metal and Drink boxes are used to make new packaging.
Warning: Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt pots), plastic bags must not be included with the PMD waste.
Harmful waste: out-of-date drugs, used batteries (電池), paint and oil…
Besides, if you don't need your old bikes at all, our school volunteers will collect them. We're going to fix them up and then give them away to kids who don't have enough money for a bike.

Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve a large number of foods. And the industry(產(chǎn)業(yè)) isn’t stopping there.

Food production

With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated(復(fù)雜的) chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that — it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Food printer to “re-create forms and pieces” of food that are “exactly the same,” freeing cooks to finish other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.

Sustainability(可持續(xù)性）

The world’s population(人口) is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050, and some experts estimate (估計(jì)) that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to keep present levels(水平). Sustainability is becoming a necessity. 3D food printing could probably help solve the problem. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids (水解膠體) from rich renewable materials(原料) like algae and grass to replace(代替) the ingredients(烹飪原料). 3D printing can reduce fuel use and emissions(排放). The stores of the future might store "food" that lasts for years, freeing up shelf space and reducing transportation and storage requirements.

Nutrition(營養(yǎng))

Future 3D food printers could make food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, “Food printing could allow customers(消費(fèi)者) to print food with customized(定制的) nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you’d eat something baked just for you on demand(要求).”

Challenges

Though there are great developments in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Most ingredients must be changed to a dry powder(粉末) before a printer can use them, and the printing process takes a lot of time, because ingredients interact (相互作用)with each other in very complex ways. Besides, most of the 3D food printers now use only dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts doubt about 3D food printers, believing they are more suitable for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.
