Is there someone you hate? Well, maybe you don’t really hate them. But you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don’t let this anger(憤怒) go, it can turn into bitterness(痛苦的情緒).

Bitterness often appears when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we’re hurting that person by criticizing(批評) him or her often, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.

Bitterness can not only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease(疾。, but also hurt our relationships(關(guān)系)with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an anger person for very long.

If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with it.

◆Accept it

Instead of trying to deny(否認)your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.

◆Stop making excuses for it

You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.

◆Forgive(原諒)and forget it

You probably can’t completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forgive it and move on. You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.

1.When does bitterness appear?

2.What happens after we keep our anger deep inside for some time?

3.How do you try not to deny your anger?

4.Will you enjoy better health and peace of mind if you forgive the other person?

5.Write down one of your favorite ways to deal with bitterness. Why is it your favorite?

Two frogs had lived in a village all their lives. They thought they would like to go and see the big city that was about ten miles away.

They talked about it for a long time, and at last they set off to see the big city.

It was a hot day, and they soon began to feel tired. They had only gone a little way when one said to the other, “We must be nearly there. Can you see the city?”

“No,” said the other frog, “but if I climb on your back I might be able to see it.”

So he climbed up on the back of the other frog to see the city.

Now when the frog put up his head, his eyes could only see what was behind, and not what was in front. So he saw the village they had just left.

“Can you see the city?” asked the frog who was below.
