【題目】Six years ago, I walked into a local animal shelter(庇護(hù)所) on a cold, rainy day. Although my house was already full of cats and dogs, I still couldn’t help visiting the shelter. This time as I was walking down the row of pens full of barking dogs I noticed a small boy looking into one of them.
He had a malnourished(營養(yǎng)不良的) looking body and a bony face with a big nose sticking out of the middle of it. He was looking at a small, golden dog. Its bony ribs were showing and its thin tail was folded between its legs. It wasn’t begging for attention like the other puppies but was hiding in the corner instead. The boy looked up at me with sad eyes and asked what was wrong with it. “It was probably abused(虐待) and abandoned”( 被遺棄的), I said. “That is why it is so scared.”
The boy immediately turned to an older lady and said, “Grandma, I want this one.” The old woman smiled and walked to the front desk to fill out the adoption forms. I followed and asked about the boy. I found out that he’d had a hard start in life too. He had just gotten custody(監(jiān)護(hù)權(quán)) of him after the state had taken him from his parents. She had hoped getting a dog would make it easier on him. I looked back at him, holding his scared little dog, and said a prayer for them both.
It was yesterday. I was driving down the road enjoying a gloriously sunny, spring day. Then in a green front yard I saw the boy. His teenage body was tall and strong. His nose no longer seemed big but fit well into his smiling face. He was throwing a ball to a healthy, happy dog with shining golden hair. His little act of love and kindness had indeed gone a long way. It had saved a dog’s life, cured his own heart, and given this middle-aged man fresh hope for us all.
【1】The writer entered the animal shelter because ____________ .
A. he loves dogs and pets
B. it was too cold outside
C. he wanted to buy a dog
D. he wanted to see the boy
【2】. Why did the boy want to adopt(收養(yǎng)) the golden dog?
A. Because the dog looked attractive.
B. Because his grandma also liked the dog.
C. Because they had something in common.
D. Because the author advised him to adopt it.
【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph ?
A. The author is a kind-hearted old man.
B. The boy’s nose has become smaller than before.
C. The author enjoys watching people playing with dogs.
D. Both the boy and the dog are growing healthily and happily.

【題目】You may know that more people drink coffee than tea around the world. And that, after oil, it is the second biggest traded commodity(商品). You may also know that the drink comes from beans which are first roasted and then ground(研磨). But what else do you know about this popular drink?
It is said that the story of coffee started with an Ethiopian goatherd(牧羊人)named Kaldi. One day Kaldi was surprised to see that his goats were behaving very strangely. Instead of grazing(吃草)quietly, they were jumping around, almost dancing. He also noticed some red “cherries” from a plant that the goats were eating. He tried some himself and was surprised by the feeling of extreme happiness and excitement. He felt like dancing too!
But it wasn’t used as a drink at first. It was used as food. The coffee berries, mixed with animal fat, were used by monks to stay awake during long hours of prayer. From Ethiopia, coffee was later cultivated(培育)in Yemen and the first hot drink was developed there around AD 1000. Three centuries later Muslims were keen coffee drinkers and as Islam spread, so did coffee. Coffee houses appeared in Cairo and Mecca.
For hundreds of years the plants were protected safely. But some beans were smuggled(偷運)out of Arabia and taken to India. In the 17th century, coffee was soon grown in a new continent. From India to Indonesia, a century later the beans were once again smuggled to Brazil. Brazil is now the largest coffee producer in the world.
It was the caffeine(咖啡因)that made the goats dance and kept the monks awake. Although it is found in other soft drinks and tea, coffee has the most caffeine. In the short term(短期), a couple of cups of coffee can prevent fatigue and delay sleep. But several cups a day, every day, can cause anxiety and restlessness.
