Humans’ Greatest Achievements
The Earth is 4.5 billion years old, but the human race has lived on it for just 200,000 years. In that short time, we have achieved some amazing things.
The list is almost endless. The invention of the airplane has changed our lives. The discovery of antibiotics (抗生素) has saved the lives of millions of people. Can you imagine living without electricity? What about the printing press (印刷術(shù))? Without the printing press, you wouldn’t be reading this. In the last 50 years, there have been great achievements in communication, such as radio, TV, computers, the Internet, and smartphones (智能手機(jī)).
What about the arts? The arts have brought pleasure to many people, but are the Beatles and Bach more important than antibiotics?
Finally, we must not forget humans' early achievements. We can't imagine modern life without cooked food and cars.
What are humans' greatest achievements? To answer the question, we need to decide what we mean by “great”. Or is it just something that makes us say “Wow,” like the Great Wall? What do you think?
A. Do you think it is difficult to have great achievements? |

【題目】 Where did humans come from? An Australian researcher believes that she’s found the answer: river valley in the African country of Botswana (博瓦納).
Professor Vanessa Hayes from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney said she and her team have traced (追蹤) modern humans back to small group of people who lived in this valley, according to the BBC.
“It’s an extremely large area, it would have been very lush (蒼翠繁茂的), and it would have actually provided a suitable habitat for modern humans,” she said. She and her team studied mitochondrial (線粒體的) DNA (mtDNA) from people who live in south Africa, such as the Khoisan people. This type of DNA is only passed down from mother to child. This makes it easier to trace one’s ancestry (祖先), according to Business Insider. By tracing mtDNA back through different generations, the team concluded that every person alive today is related to a woman who lived in Botswana.
However, some experts doubt Hayes’ findings, saying that studies like hers are no longer important or necessary. “The idea that we’re looking for a single origin [of modern humans] is out of fashion,” said John Hawks, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, US, in Popular Science.
There are many other locations around the world where humans could have gotten their start. It is likely that mankind appeared in many places at the same time. “I increasingly think that there probably wasn’t a single population in which modern humans evolved (進(jìn)化). If that is the case, there is no ‘homeland’,” said Ryan Raaum, who researches African population genetics (遺傳學(xué)) at Lehman College, US.

【題目】 You may know about “junk food” like French fries. But do you know about “junk sleep”?
Recently, a British survey found that electronic(電子的) products in teenagers’ bedrooms are affecting(影響) their sleep.

I packed, and was ready to leave for my two-day trip. I had been busy with my work. I had made p for the trip for the last few days, and I expected to get r for several days. As I got into the car to leave, my mind flew to my kids.
How to keep in touch with your kids when you're busy or far away is a dilemma(兩難的問題) many fathers have. Men like to focus special attention on one thing for a long p, but this can lead to trouble. Moving from work to family isn't always an easy thing. And if you don't s your kids that you're thinking about them, they may think that you don't care.
As I started down the road, I suddenly stopped to t back to my house and wrote a short message on a c of cards to each of my children. I put each in a “secret” place where I knew they'd find it. When I called the next night, they both said e, “Daddy, I got your card. When did you do that?”
I was moved when I heard these words. What I had never thought was that a small thing had a big influence on my kids. It proved(證明) that they were in my heart. And distance (距離) couldn't s them from their father. To my satisfaction, they feel “l(fā)ove” of their father. This v experience encouraged me to continue to do the small things to be a responsible father.
As fathers get much busier and have to work longer hours, they usually pay l attention to the small things. Don't miss the good chances to let your kids see how important they are.
Take a moment to do a small thing for your kids. It won't s small to them.
