In one way, it may be thought that failure(失。﹊s a part of life. In another, failure may be regarded as a step towards success.
The "spider-story" is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a hole on a hill from the English. He watched a spider(蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have got confidence from this and to have gone on to beat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb(電燈泡) , made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were you in high spir¬it then? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?
Second, is the goal(目標(biāo)) you are trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: "If I am successful in this, where will it get me?" This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
The third thing to remember about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, "You can't win them all. “

Two students started quarreling at school. One student shouted dirty words at the other, and a fight began.
What can be done to stop fights like this at school? In some schools, disputants ( 爭(zhēng)執(zhí)者 ) sit down with peer mediators (同齡調(diào)解員). Peer mediators are usually students with special training in this kind of problem.
Peer mediators help disputants to talk in a friendly way. Here are some of the ways they use.
Express what you think clearly but don’t say anything to hurt the other. Begin with “I feel” instead of “You always”.
Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Don’t stop the other person’s words.
Keep looking at the other person’s eyes when he or she is speaking.
Try to see the problems on the other person’s side.
Never put anyone down . Saying things like “You are foolish” makes the talk difficult.
Try to find a result that makes both people happy.
Peer mediators never decide on the winner. They don’t decide who is right or who is wrong. Instead they help disputants find their own“win-win” result. A “win –win” result can make everyone feel good.

B
People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss. In the English language, there are many meanings using the word “mouth”. But some of them are not so nice.
For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest (抗議) and say “Do not bad mouth me.”
Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret(后悔) because it hurts that person’s feelings. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say, “I really put my foot in my mouth this time.” In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.
Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend is going to say. When this happens, the friend might say, “You took the words right out of my mouth!”
Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person “was born with a silver spoon in his mouth”.
This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives “from hand to mouth”. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.

To write a great news story, you have to make sure it is correct, relevant (相關(guān)的) and fresh.
For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.
Any mistakes that appear in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble.
For example, if a newspaper said that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space, it would be wrong. He wasn't the first. The newspaper would probably lose lots of readers because of that mistake
A news story is not only correct , but also relevant to its readers. People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them. That is why you care more about what happens at your school than at American schools. It is also why newspapers in Beijing don't talk about much news in Shanghai or Hong Kong .
Finally, news must always be fresh. When you pick up your evening newspaper, you want to read about news that happens that day. You don't want to read about news from last week!
So, now you know what makes a good news story. Have a good look at our newspaper and see if it is full of good news .You can try writing a news story for our newspaper like a real reporter.

In the past, going to a piano teacher was the only way to learn how to play the piano. You could have one lesson a week. If you didn’t have private(個(gè)人的) lessons, you could still learn piano, but you would have to learn it by yourself. This was easy for some, but very difficult for most. However, with technology as it is today, there is at last another way that you can take piano lessons. You can take an online course.
An online course can save you lots of money. If a private lesson costs 30 or 40 dollars per week, just think about how quickly that adds up. You can take a complete online course in piano by spending a small part of the money that you would pay for taking weeks of private lessons. Also, private lessons are only usually one hour per week. If you have questions during the rest of the week, or if you forget something that your teacher said, you will have to wait for your next lesson to continue your learning. However, online piano courses are quite different.
With an online piano course, you can work at your own pace(進(jìn)度). You can also take as many lessons per week as you’d want, or go back and listen to your last lesson if you have forgotten anything. Most adults who want to learn how to play the piano enjoy being able to go back and listen to lessons they watched before. It can give you a good idea of what you were doing right, what you were doing wrong, and what you should be doing before the next lesson.
Of course, if you need someone to sit beside you and give you instant feedback(及時(shí)反饋) while you are playing, you are not suggested to choose an online course. But most adult learners think they can get their own type of feedback by watching the course again and again.
【小題1】       is not mentioned in the passage to learn to play the piano.
A.Going to a piano teacher        B. Asking experts for information   C. Teaching oneself
【小題2】Going to a piano teacher is much more        than having an online piano course.

A. ask questions whenever you want
B. watch the lessons whenever you’d like
C. get some advice while you are playing the piano.
【小題4】Most adults like to go back and listen to the lessons again because         .

【小題5】How many advantages of an online piano course have been introduced in the passage?
A. 2                           B. 3                         C. 4

People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it’s not bad to make mistakes, and here is why.
At first, a mistake is a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things, because when you are trying new things, you are growing. If you never try new things, how can you improve? How can you create? The simple answer is: “you can’t” Look around you, everything you see is the result of someone trying new things.
Another good thing about mistakes is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. For example, Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb. When he was asked how he felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are much closer to success. Why? Because you have said what you should say, and you have done what you should do. Every time you make a mistake, you are closer to success. But it doesn’t mean that you can make mistakes without thinking. Instead, when you try new things you have to think them over, so that you can keep away from some unnecessary mistakes. We shouldn’t spend all our time and money on the only one way, but use them correctly, because our time and money are limited(有限的)
There is an old saying, “if you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough.” So go bravely and make mistakes. And learn, and grow, and succeed.
【小題1】If you are making a mistake, that means__________.

A.you’re careful B.you’re kind

A.time B.money C.success D.new things

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 AM. When I arrived there, I walked to the door and knocked, “Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.
When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”
“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.
“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said. “I’m on my way to a hospice(臨終醫(yī)院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.”
I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(計(jì)價(jià)器).
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a special building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
In the early morning, she suddenly said,” I’m tired. Let’s go now.”
We drove in silence to the address she had given me.
“How much do I pay you?” she asked.
“Nothing.” I said.
“You have to make a living,” she answered. “Oh, there are other passengers,” I answered.
Almost without thinking, I gave her a hug(擁抱). She held on me and said, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”
【小題1】The old woman chose to ride through the city in order to ______.
