Mark Shackleton's opinion on people who keep pets has received a lot of comments from our readers. Here are two of them.

  Kungsbacka

  Sweden

  Dear Lucy,

In my opinion, animals like cats or dogs are good company for old and lonely people. But in the past dogs were good helpers for hunters, they watched the house, and so on. The cats who lived on the farms helped the farmers to kill rats and keep other small animals out of the farm. I agree with Mark about the danger of keeping animals in big cities and houses and giving them plastic bones and bad food, etc. I hope we can give them the old life back again so they can live in natural environment but also close to people.

Yours sincerely,

Hans Borjesson

  Broager Central Skole

  Denmark

  Dear Lucy,

We are some pupils who don't like Mark's opinion about pets in the October issue of Modern English. We disagree with him because we think that children have a lot of fun with pets and they learn how to treat animals. Many old people usually live alone and they love to talk to pets, they depend on them.

And what would happen if you let the pets go free? Very soon there would be more cats and dogs in the world than people. Or the animals would die because they weren't able to manage on their own. Look at the alleycats nowadays! They weren't taken care of. Finally, we don't think that Mark has a pet himself or else he would have known better.

Yours sincerely,

Pupils from Broager Central Skole
