Dragons can be friendly or fierce (兇狠的) . They can bring good luck or cause death, but one thing is sure―people talk about them almost every?where in the world. For a creature that doesn't actu?ally exist, that's quite something.
In Chinese culture, dragons are generous and wise, although they can be①unpredictable. The dragon was closely connected to the royal family: the emperor's robes (禮袍) have a symbol of a gold dragon with five claws.②Other members of the royal family were allowed to wear dragon symbols too,but with fewer claws and of a different colour. According to popular belief,if you were born in the year of the dragon, you are intelligent, brave, and a natural leader.
But in the West, dragons had a different repu?tation (名聲) . The very first text in English, the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, tells the story of a Scandinavian hero,Beowulf, who fights and kills a dangerous dragon but is himself killed in the fight. However, across the border in Wales, the red drag?on which appears on the Welsh flag is a positive symbol, indicating strength and a sense of national identity.
③Why should the dragon have a different character in different parts of the world? Some experts believe it is due to the animals that the myths grew out of. In the West? the idea of the dragon probably came from the snake—an animal which people hated and④ of (害怕)
But in China, the idea of the dragon may have come from the alligator — a shy animal which lives in rivers, but which is usually only seen when there is plenty of water―a good sign for agriculture (農(nóng)業(yè)) . So the Chinese dragon was a bringer of ?good for?tune.

Why is it that some people seem to learn several languages without any effort, while for others learn?ing just one foreign language is neither enjoyable nor successful? What makes learning a new language so easy for some and so difficult or others?
We each have our own preferred way of learning as a result of our cultural and educational back?grounds and our personalities. Experts have identi?fied different learning styles.
Visual Learners usually enjoy reading and prefer to see an image of the words they are learn?ing. Auditory Learners,on the other hand, prefer to learn by listening. They enjoy conversations and talking to others.
Some people like to learn by using their hands to touch objects? while others like to move around and need frequent breaks from sitting at a desk.
There are Analytical Learners, meaning they enjoy understanding how the language works. They love studying grammar rules and like to focus on de?tails, whereas Global Learners are more interested in communicating their ideas and are not worried about whether what they say is grammatically correct.
In spoken English, the Japanese tend to be Re?flective Learners. They think carefully before they speak to ensure their message is accurate. They do not make so many mistakes but their communication is slower. European learners tend to be Impulsive Learners. They speak more fluently and worry about how well they are communicating rather than how many mistakes they are making.
So,to do well in a language? you should identi- fy your style and try to find a class that will teach you the way you want to learn. For example,if you are a Reflective Learner, you may not do so well in a purely conversational class and as an Auditory Learner, you probably don't want to do so much reading. In fact if you are an Auditory Learner, you are probably not enjoying yourself right now!
