“I love you” might be one of the most important combinations of words in English language,as it's the symbol of closeness between a couple, parents and children, lovers, brothers and sisters, etc.

But it seems that the way it's used in China is a little different.

A short video filmed by Anhui TV station shows a number of college students tell their parents “I love you”. Almost all parents' responses were similar. “Are you drunk?” asked one parent. In most cases, parents responded “All right, what do you want to buy?”

Why don't Chinese families use those words? Most Chinese people think they feel embarrassed to say them face to face. In fact,it can be dated back to Confucian thoughts. “The parents’ responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions”’ Xia Xueluan,a psychologist from Peking University, told us. “They usually educate children by using negative language. ”

However,it doesn’t mean that love can’t be expressed. As a teenage student, what can you do? If you are not used to saying “I love you” to your parents, why not try to do something? After all, actions speak louder than words. Helping your parents with housework is a good way. More importantly, you are supposed to keep them away from worrying about you.
