B. Choose the words or expressions to complete the passage.

A couple of days ago, I saw a dog named Cookie. He was dying of cancer (). The dog’s owners, Steven and Maggie were very ________, and so was their little boy, Jimmy. I told the family we couldn’t do ________ for Cookie, and I told them that they could give the old dog the euthanasia procedure (安樂死) in their home.

The next day, I felt a catch in my throat as Cookie’s family was around him. Jimmy petted (愛撫) the old dog for the last time. In a few minutes, Cookie died ________. The little boy seemed to accept Cookie’s death. We sat together for a while-after Cookie’s death, talking about why animal lives are shorter than human lives. Jimmy, who as listening quietly said, “I know why.”

“People are born so that they can learn how to ________… like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” Jimmy said, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long as human beings.”

So remember, if a dog was the teacher, you would learn things like:

●When loved ones come home, always run to meet them.

●Run, ________, and play daily.

●Let people touch you.

●On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a big tree.

●When you are happy, dance around.

●Never pretend to be something you’re not.

根據(jù)and I told them that they could give the old dog the euthanasia procedure (安樂死) in their home“并且我告訴他們,他們可以在家里給這個年歲大的狗安樂死”可知,餅干被安樂死,所以它是安靜地死去,故選A。

correct mistakes糾正錯誤;work hard努力工作;deal with trouble處理麻煩;like a good life過上美好的生活。根據(jù)like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?“比如一直愛著每個人,對每個人都很好”可知,表示“過上美好的生活”,故選D。

jump跳,故選A。

be silent安靜;cry loudly大聲喊;be angry生氣;laugh happily開心地笑。

根據(jù)and I told them that they could give the old dog the euthanasia procedure (安樂死) in their home“并且我告訴他們,他們可以在家里給這個年歲大的狗安樂死”可知,餅干被安樂死,所以它是安靜地死去,故選A。

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(資源). Many of the world's great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeastern Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles up it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(壩) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located on rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of them.

Choose the best answer

People consume more than 2.25 billion cups of coffee across the world every day, and most say coffee tastes bitter.

Now, a new study suggests that coffee lovers can make their drink taste sweeter by simply changing the color of their cup. Scientists claim that blue and glass cups, which are popular in some coffee shops, reduce a coffee’s bitterness, without any need for sugar.

To prove their claim, scientists found 36 volunteers and used three different colored cups – blue, white and transparent (透明) glass – to do an experiment. In the experiment, white cup enhanced the flavor of coffee, which made coffee drunk from the white cup taste less sweet when compared to the other colored cups. The blue cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.

The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with bitterness. So coffee in white cups, which appears the brownest, tastes the least sweet.

“The study suggests that café owners and baristas (咖啡吧服務(wù)員), as well a coffee cup manufacturers (制造商), should carefully consider the color of their cups,” said the scientists.

However, the idea that color can alter the taste of food and drink is not new.

A study published last year revealed that red, strawberry-flavored mousse served on a white plate was rated as 10 percent sweeter and 15 percent more flavorous than the same food presented on a black plate.

3How can you make coffee sweeter if it’s too bitter according to the passage?

A.Use a blue cup.B.Use a yellow cup.

C.Reduce the sugar.D.Add less milk.

4Why does coffee in white cups taste the least sweet?

A.Because white cups are less beautiful than other cups.

B.Because white cups are more popular with coffee lovers.

C.Because white cups are least associated with bitterness.

D.Because white cups make coffee seem the brownest.

5According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.People can make food taste sweeter by altering the size of the container.

B.Black plates usually enhance the sweetness of food and drink.

C.It seems that the color of the glass can alter the flavor of the coffee inside.
