I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧馬場). The last time I was there he told me his story.

When he was young, his family is too poor to have a house to live in. One day when he was in a high school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of owning a horse ranch. He also drew a picture to show a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a beautiful farm. The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F. Roberts asked, “Why did I receive an F?” His teacher said, “This is an unrealistic (不現(xiàn)實的) dream for a young boy like you. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money.” Then the teacher added, “ If you rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider (重新考慮) your grade.”

The boy went home and thought about it for a long and hard time. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to change your own mind on this.” Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy handed in the same paper, making no changes at all. He told his teacher “You can keep the F and I sill keep my dream.”

Monty said a lot of kids’ dreams can be stolen. Don’t let anyone steal your dream. Follow your heart, no matter what others think. Have enough gumption (毅力) till your dream comes true.

Although she’s quite young, Drew Barrymore can be a Hollywood legend (傳奇). She was born on February 22, 1975, in California. Being from a family that produced great actors, she quickly found her way into the spotlight (聚光燈).

When she was 11 months old, she made her first advertisement on TV. She made her first movie at the age of 2. Five years later, she acted Gertie in Steven Spielberg’s famous film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

However, it wasn’t all roses and sunshine when Barrymore was growing up. She was drinking wine by the time she was 9, smoking marijuana (大麻) at 10.

Most kid stars in Hollywood fail to become stars as adults. And most of the time, once they’re out of the spotlight, they stay out. But Drew Barrymore doesn’t.

As she was growing older, Barrymore got to learn that life is more meaningful than dangerous actions in the films. She started to build a career in 1997. She has made many successful films since then, including Charlie’s Angels (2000) and 50 First Dates (2004).

“In my life, there is darkness and drama, and I ‘m trying my best. I just want to challenge myself and prove that I can do more.”

In fact, if you don’t know her disordered childhood, you might find it hard to believe she’s such a sweet person now. Like many of the characters she plays in her comedy, Drew is easy-going and laughs a lot. In 2007, she was on the cover of People magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful People issue.

“Life is very interesting … in the end, some of your greatest pains, become your greatest strengths,” Drew said.

閱讀短文,回答下列問題

“Tom? Are you in bed yet?” called Mrs. White. There was no answer. Mrs. White put down her book and went to her 14-year-old son’s room. Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen on which a motorbike was running fast.

“Oh, Tom. You’re still playing on that computer. You must stop now, it’s half past eleven. If you don’t go to bed soon, you’ll be very tired tomorrow.” Said Mrs. White.

“But I’ve nearly won the game.” Said Tom to Mrs. White. She could see the excitement (激動) on his face. She sat down beside him.

“You’re always playing on the computer. You spend more time on this machine than on your homework.”

Today more and more families have computers. Parents hope computers can help their children improve their study at school. But, many of their children use computers to play games, to watch videos, instead of studying. We often see that computer game houses are crowded with people, especially young boys. They spend a lot of money competing with the computerized machines. The more they lose, the more they want to win. The result is that they don’t want to work or study.

In some other countries, even scientists hate computers. They say computers cause millions of people to lose their jobs or cause them a lot of trouble. Computer game addiction (癮) is a serious problem in social life. Something has to be done to solve the problem.
