The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs “fuel” to supply it with energy. This is provided by the food we eat. But how much do we need to stay healthy?

The energy value of food is usually measured in calories(卡). A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1℃. The number of calories people need per day is different, as the picture shows. Also, the number of calories you use at any one moment normally depends on the activity you are in. For example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on.

The energy in food is in the form of three kinds of chemical materials—carbohydrate(碳水化合物), protein(蛋白質(zhì)) and fat. Carbohydrate provides 3.8 Cal /gm of the energy, protein 4.0 Cal/gm, and fat 8.8 Cal/gm. Each food contains different amounts of these materials, as the round pictures show.

(P= protein      C= carbohydrate    F=fat)

Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure (失敗) becomes an experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards(標(biāo)準(zhǔn)). When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to blame (責(zé)怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honour list on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick consolations (安慰), prize or say, “It doesn’t matter.” Because it does. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” Don’t blame anyone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.
【小題1】How do most parents prevent their children from failure?

A.It’s impossible to enjoy a game if he misses it.
B.He is the worst of all.
C.It’s natural not to win a game and no one can win all the time.
D.His teammates are not good enough.
【小題3】The writer of this article thinks that if a child fails, parents should __________________.
A.give him a small prize
B.a(chǎn)dvise him to repeat failure
C.blame others
D.encourage him to learn from failure
【小題4】4. Which would be the best title (標(biāo)題) for the passage?

The most unusual museum in London is the Science Museum. In most museums, there’s no shouting and no running, and you aren’t allowed to touch the exhibits(展品). But the Science Museum is different, because it’s noisy! People talk about what they can see and do there, and some of the machines are noisy as well. Visiting the Science Museum is fun and it’s a great way to learn about science because you can work things out and try out ideas.

When I visit the Science Museum, I go to the Launch Pad. This is my favourite room because you can do physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with  falling sand, you have to move a kind of truck on wheels into the correct position. I also go to the Rocket Show. You can learn how we travel into space and back again.

Then I go upstairs to Human and Nature room. You can compare your speed with animals there. You hear a noise and push a button(按鈕). If you aren’t fast enough, the lion catches you! I’m faster than all my friends, but the lion still catches me.

There are also rooms on transport, the environment and space technology, as well as maths, physics and chemistry.

You can do a lot of things in this museum, but you have to obey some rules as well. For example, you mustn’t take photos of the exhibits in the museum. But you can buy postcards of them in the museum shops.

Above all, the Science Museum is free. That means you can drop in for a few minutes or you can stay as long as you like—it’s open every day, from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It’s my favourite museum in the whole world.

3. How much does it cost to go into the Science Museum?

   A. $10 for adults.                       B. $6 for children.

   C. Only free for children.               D. Free for everyone.

4. How long can you stay at the Science Museum?

   A. 6 hours.      B. 8 hours.     C. 10 hours.    D.12hours.

   A. We can see a lot of exhibits in the Science Museum.

   B. People can talk to each other in the Science Museum.

C. There’s no shouting and no running in the Science Museum.
