(joggers)

A few months ago, my neighborhood joined an army of joggers. They were there all the time; early morning, noon, and evenings. There were little old ladies in grey sweaters, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!”

My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You'll feel great.”

Well, I had nothing against feeling great, so I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. According to my experience and the number of the people who left our neighbor jogging army, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around. I'm not alone in my opinion.

First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding (重?fù)?/span>) while you run down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack (心臟病突發(fā))while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.

Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.

And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first week: it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?

I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking fast for two miles three times a week, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

根據(jù)題干“writers attitude towards jogging in the beginning”定位到第二段第一句“Well, I had nothing against feeling great, so I took up jogging seriously”。 A選項(xiàng)中“worth a try”翻譯為“值得一試”。B選項(xiàng)中“very fond of it”翻譯為“非常喜歡”。C選項(xiàng)中“strongly against it”翻譯為“強(qiáng)烈反對(duì)”。D選項(xiàng)中“must be painful”翻譯為“一定很痛苦”。

題目問的是作者兩個(gè)月后放棄慢跑的原因,通過題目中“two months”定位到第二段第一句后半部分“…and gave it (jogging) a good two months of my life, and not a day more”。 后半段進(jìn)一步說明了并不是作者一個(gè)人放棄慢跑,并在第二段最后一句提到“Im not alone in my opinion”。 第三段第一句提到“First of all, jogging is very hard on the body”可知慢跑對(duì)身體會(huì)產(chǎn)生不好的影響。第四段第一句“Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging”,可知作者通過跑步不能獲得任何愉快的感受。

通過前文作者放棄慢跑及對(duì)原因的闡述,加上最后一段“I dont joy any more, and I dont think I ever will”可知作者以后再不會(huì)慢跑,對(duì)慢跑持有否定的態(tài)度。

Comfort Zone

I would never forget what I learned from the day when I left my junior high school. On the last day our teacher told us something_______that I would like to share with you.

He began by drawing a man standing in the middle of a circle. To make it more interesting, he drew things like a house, a car and a few friends inside the circle.

He asked, “Can anyone tell me what this is?” In a long silence, one student decided to______his idea,”The world?” The teacher said, “That’s close. This is your Comfort Zone. Inside your circle you have all the things that are inportant to you. Your home, your family, your friends and your job. People feel that inside this circle they are safe from any______.”

“Can anyone tell me what happens when you step out of this circle?” A strong silence came over the room. The same student replied,”You are afraid.” Another student said, “You may make mistakes.” The silence continued and our teacher smiled and asked,” When you make mistakes, what can the result be?” The first student said,” You______something.”

“Exactly, you are learning.”O(jiān)ur teacher turned to the blackboard and drew an arrow(箭頭) ____from the man to the outside of the circle. He went on saying,”When you leave your Comfort Zone, you put yourself out there, in a______that you are not comfortable with, The result is that you learn something that you did not know and you enlarge your knowledge to become a better person.”He turned again to the blackboard and drew a bigger circle around the original(原來的)circle, and______a few new things like more friends, a big house, etc.

A lesson from this story is that if you stay inside your Comfort Zone you will never be able to open your eyes to the outside world and learn, When you step out of your Comfort Zone, you will______make your circle bigger to challenge your mind and grow to be stronger, and all in all be a better person.

A. commonly B. human C. treated D. ill E. market

Food safety nowadays are has become a rising concern. The food we eat seems to have great effects on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of 1 illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers realized that things 2 used to keep colors in meats and other food additive(添加劑),caused cancer. Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult, all the time to know which things on the packaging labels are helpful or harmful. The additives, which we eat, are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of 3 cow. Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals in order to get a higher price on the 4. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practices continue.
