Jaden is a six-year-old boy. He experienced the unlucky things of life twice. First he lost his dad when he was four and his mom died unexpectedly in her sleep last month. Jaden’s heart was broken. His parents’ death hit him a lot.

But things always go towards a good side. A few weeks later, Jaden told his aunt that he was tired of seeing everyone sad all the time. He’d like to see more smiles around him. He hoped that the number of the smiles could reach 100.

Then he asked his aunt to buy him some little toys and take him to the center of the city. “I’m trying to make people smile,” said Jaden. At first, he was not sure if the people passing by would like to receive his toys. In fact, he was always successful and got close to his dream step by step, because no one could refuse such a little boy’s giving and expecting.

“I’m keeping a count of 100 smiles,” said Jaden. When asked if he could make it, he answered, “I think I can.” Reported by Barbara

In today’s households where both parents go to work and kids have busy schedules with school homework and many afternoon activities, finding time for a gathering at the table seems all but impossible. Yet, studies have shown time and again that eating together has lots of benefits for family members, especially children.

According to reports issued by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), children who eat more with their family are at lower risk of developing poor eating habits, weight problems or alcohol dependencies. They tend to perform better academically than those who frequently eat alone. Family meals came into American life in the mid-20th century. In the 60’s and 70’s, social, economic and technological changes quickly dissolved the short-lived way of family meals. Restaurant visits, take-out and TV dinners have since become normal.

There are indicators, however, that the old customs are coming back. According to the latest CASA reports, 59% of surveyed families said they ate diner together at least five times a week, a significant increase from 47% in 1998. Whatever drives this trend, it is a development that should be welcomed.

Eating together as a family is not just about food and nutrition. It is about teaching them how to become members of their society and culture. Food has become so easily and cheaply available that we no longer appreciate its significance. We have to rediscover its importance and its value. Sharing a meal with loved ones should be considered a special event, which can almost take on the form of a ceremony, as it was practiced by our ancestors for whom finding food was a constant struggle.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the simple act of eating at home surrounded by family may make children more virtuous or socially more responsible. But it can lay the groundwork for a lot of things that point them in the right direction.

2.What is the writer’s attitude towards eating together as a family?

A. Against. B. Encouraging.

C. Neither against nor encouraging. D. Uninterested.

3.From the passage we learn our ancestors possibly _____.

A. valued the education of children B. liked struggling with each other

C. appreciated the importance of food D. cared much about food nutrition

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Family Dinners Benefit Kids B. Good Eating Habits Matter

In the UK, bus journeys are very common. Buses are often convenient(便利的)for the people who live or work in the city center. Passengers can avoid heavy traffic and not have to pay for the parking. However, taking the bus is just a necessary but boring part of life: they get on the bus, pay for it and sit or find a place to stand when it is crowded. Everyone may feel tired and bored.

In Latin America, however, bus trips can be wonderful. For a start, films are shown on the buses between cities for passengers to have fun along the journeys. Local buses do not show films, but drivers usually turn on the radio and it can be great for passengers to listen to songs and get relaxed.

Even better than films and music are the sights and sounds on the buses. Local buses always go to parts of the town that passengers would not visit by themselves. They can see other cultures of the town from the windows of the buses.

Besides, passengers’ luggage(行李)is also interesting. It is common to see a happy dog’s head getting out of somebody’s bag or a lovely chicken “speaking cheerfully” under somebody’s arm. Once on a bus in Peru, a farmer even tied a sheep to the top of the bus. It was quite surprising.

All in all, taking the bus in Latin America is really fun and unforgettable.

1.According to the passage, in the UK, how do passengers probably feel on the buses?

2.In Latin America, what can passengers do to have fun along the journeys on the buses?

3.In the writer’s opinion, what are even better than films and music on the buses?

5.What does the passage mainly tell us?

It mainly tells us about ______________________________ in Latin America.
