Billie Holiday(1915-1959)

Billie Holiday is often described as a genius. Her voice not only moved audiences, but also shookAmerican society.

During her time, American society was still segregated(種族隔離的).As an African-American, Holidaylived a hard life. But her life experience also inspired her singing.

Holiday worked with white bands in the 1930s,which was ground-breaking(開拓性的)at that time. Holiday taught Americans to question their segregated society.

Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)

Virginia Woolf was one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Her stream-of-consciousness (意識流)writing style deeply influenced modern writing.

Stream-of-consciousness focuses on the"flow”of thoughts and inner feelings of a particular character. Thiswas very different from most writing at the time.
