Prince William kept the best for last. After two days of his visit, his final day of activities in China included feeding carrots to a 13-year-old elephant.
In Yunnan Province, the prince heard about the dangers to China's remaining 250wild elephants. He also heard the story of Chang Zongbao.Chang Zongbao is a policeman whose job is to protect elephants and other wild animals in Yunnan's rainforests.
For 27years,Chang Zongbao has climbed every mountain."We go for days, following the poachers (偷獵者) and then waiting till they sound asleep. That's the safest time to catch them,"he says.A person killing an elephant can be sentenced (判處) to death in China.
And that has worked.China is one of the safest place for elephants these days.
The main problem in China is the disappearing forest. In the past, natural forest was around the reserves (保護(hù)區(qū)),so elephants could travel freely. Now the reserves are completely cut off from each other by farms. The elephants often walk into farms and villages. They eat up bananas and other kinds of fruits.Sometimes they hurt farmers.
Before ending my interview,Mr.Chang tells me."Every piece of forest,I work to save it.Every elephant,I work to save it.So when I am old,I can tell my grandchildren I did my best."It's also a message Prince William would like to send.
