It’s possible to do many simple tricks with numbers. Here is one trick, if you follow the instructions, you will find it’s really interesting.
First, write down your house number. For example, if your address is 73 Jin Shang Road, you would write down 73. After you write down your house address number, you double it. Then add 5 to this doubled number. For example, if your address is 73 and you double it, you will get 146. Then you add 5, you will get 151.
And then, multiply this number by 50. In our example here, you’ll get 7550. The next step is to add your age to this total. For example, if you’re 16 years old, you should add 16 to this total. In our example here, the result will be 7566.
After that, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365. In our example here, 365 added to 7566 is 7931.
The final step is this: Subtract 615 from the number that you have. Take away 615 from the total. In our example, 7931 minus 615 is 7316.
The result here—7316—is the trick. The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the number is the age of the person. That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 16 is the age that we used.
Isn’t it interesting? Do you want to have a try now?

We always celebrated Dad’s birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home. When we knew it might be his last birthday, the whole family decided to get together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home.
Dad was a good storyteller and we were always his listeners. During a quiet moment, I announced it was now Dad’s turn to listen to stories for a change. I wanted everyone to tell Dad what we loved about him. The room became quiet. Then one after another, people told stories from their hearts, while Dad listened with tears in eyes.
Everyone seemed to have more than one story. Even the little grandchildren couldn’t wait to tell Dad why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many hundreds of people in his life, here was our chance to tell him how much we love him. A few months later, at Dad’s memorial service, we more fully realized what we had given to Dad that night. Those are the stories people normally tell at a funeral (葬禮) after a loved one is no longer alive to hear the words. They tell stories, full of tears. But we had given those memories to Dad in his life, and we had told them through laughter, together with hugs and joy. He had them to hold and enjoyed them from time to time in his mind during his last days and months.
Words do matter, and they are enough. We just need to say them or to speak them publicly the ones we love. That’s the ways to give back love and that’s our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life.

For 99% of human history, people took their food from the world around them. They ate all that they could find, and then moved on. Then around 10,000 years ago, about 1% of human history, people learned to farm the land.
The kind of food we eat depends on which part of the world we live in, or which part of our country we live in. For example, in the south of China they eat rice, but in the north they eat noodles. In European countries near the sea, people eat a lot of fish. In central Europe, away from the sea, people don’t eat so much fish, but they eat more meat. For example, in Germany and Poland, there are hundreds of different kinds of sausages.
In North America, Australia, and Europe, people eat with knives and forks. In China, people eat with chopsticks. In parts of India and the Middle East, people use their fingers to pick up food.
Nowadays it is possible to transport food easily from one part of the world to another. We can eat whatever we like, at any time of the year. In Britain, bananas come from Africa; rice comes from India or the U.S.A.; strawberries come from Chile or Spain. Food is a very big business. If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others?
Don’t listen to people who say that young people today often think only of themselves. It’s not true at all. More and more young people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don’t do it for money. Here are some of their stories.

Alice Hamilton, 17
I’m going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths(小道) in the mountains. It’s going to be terrific(棒極了). I will spend the whole summer living in a tent(帳篷) and breathing the fresh mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I will be able to do something good at the same time!

Jason Moore, 18
This summer, I’ll volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to the poor. They’ll teach me what to do, so I am going to help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.

Trish Anderson, 16
I’m going to teach children who have trouble in reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading For Life. Every day, I’m going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher, and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
