If you are writing or studying, it makes much difference where the light comes from. People use        and pens every day. They have to be very careful about the way of the light because the light shines on their work.
Every        gets its light either from daylight        the window        from the lamps or electricity,        no matter what kind of light it is, the way it shines towards our books or work is very important to the eyes.
Take a book and sit with your        toward the window, and try to read. Your shadow(影子) falls all over the page and makes it        for your eyes as if you were in a        room.
Now turn around and face the window. The page is        shadow again, while the bright light is in your eyes.
Try sitting with your        side toward the window. This is very good for        , but if you were writing, the shadow        fall across the page and bother you        .
There is another way – sit        your left side to the window. Now everything is perfect for writing as well.
Whatever kind of light is in the room, the rule about the right way to sit is        the same.

Have you ever wondered?
Why do airplanes take longer to fly west than east?
It can take five hours to go west-east from New York (NY) to London but seven hours to travel east-west from London to NY. The reason for the difference is an atmospheric phenomenon (大氣現(xiàn)象) known as the jet stream (氣流). The jet stream is a very high altitude (=" above" sea level) wind which always blows from the west to the east across the Atlantic. So the planes moving at a constant air speed go faster from the west to the east when they are moving with the wind than in the opposite.
What would happen if the gravity on Earth was suddenly turned off?
Supposing we could magically turn off gravity. Would buildings and other buildings float away? What happened would depend on (依靠) how strongly the things were attached (吸附) to the earth. The earth is moving at quite a speed, moving at over a thousand miles per hour. If you turn something around your head on a string, it goes around in a circle until you let go of the string. Then it flies off in a straight line. ‘Turning off’ gravity would be like letting go of the string. Things not attached to the earth would fly off in a straight line. People in buildings would suddenly shoot upwards at a great speed until they hit the ceiling (=" top" surface of a room). Most things outside would fly off into space.
小題1:What information can we get from the first passage?
A.It is the jet stream that affects how fast airplanes fly.

小題3:It can be known that without gravity _________.
A.buildings and other structures would float away

小題4:Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A.It takes seven hours to travel from London to New York.

For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad points in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.
You do not have to be spineless (優(yōu)柔寡斷的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked or loved if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights (正當(dāng)行為). But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You cannot expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed if he does not refuse to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged (灰心喪氣的) when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults (缺點(diǎn)) and have to fight against them.
At the same time, it is important to remember that while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you do not like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right when you have to learn to get along the best with the situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you cannot change.
小題1:One of the two ways the writer suggests for us to get along with others is to __________.
A.work hard at everything we do
B.enjoy the best share of everything
C.look for treasure in order to be successful
D.pay more attention to their strong points
小題2:If a person wants to be popular, he or she has to __________.
A.be polite and friendly
B.give up some rights
C.get away arguing with other people
D.be ready to change his or her character
小題3:There is no person but someone should be blamed if he or she __________.
A.is modest and generous
B.is selfish and lazy
C.does not draw a lesson from his or her own fault
D.is very happy with unpleasant quality
小題4:The purpose for the writer to write the passage is to __________.
A.train you to be perfect
B.show you the way to be happy
C.tell you how to act when you dislike a person
D.teach you how to be popular among your friends

Space vegetables are grown from seeds (種子) that have been taken to space and brought back to the earth. The seeds are affected by the radiation (輻射) and low gravity in space. When they are brought back to the earth, these seeds produce vegetables that are bigger and healthier than normal vegetables. However, some people worry about eating space vegetables. They think that space vegetables might not be good for us and could make us get sick because of the radiation in space. However, people should not be frightened because space vegetables are very healthy.
Here are some facts that you should know about space vegetables.
Space vegetables are grown from seeds that are carefully chosen. When seeds are brought back from space, they are tested to make sure that they will be safe to eat.
Space vegetables are better for you than normal vegetables. For example, space tomatoes stay fresh for twenty days, which is one week longer than normal tomatoes.
After genetically modified (轉(zhuǎn)基因) food appeared in the market, people worried that they were eating unknown things. For example, if nut genes (堅(jiān)果基因) are put inside potatoes, people allergic (過敏的) to nuts might get sick from eating these potatoes because they do not know they are also eating nuts. Unlike genetically modified food, space vegetables have not been genetically changed. This means that no new genes are put into the vegetables. Therefore, there are no dangers of eating something unknown.

小題3:According to the passage, normal tomatoes can stay fresh for about ______ days.

小題4:The writer wants to tell us that ______.
A.space vegetables are grown in space
B.everybody worries about eating space vegetables
C.space vegetables are safe and good for people to eat
D.space vegetables may bring illness to us because of the radiation in space
