Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. It’s a great pity. It is reported that about 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Therefore, we must take care of the animals around us. Once they are gone, they will never come back again. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than a source of food. Every animal has its importance to nature. Destroying one kind of animal can cause many problems. For example, when farmers kill large numbers of hawks(鷹), their eat rats and mice, with fewer or no hawks to keep down their numbers, rats and mice multiply quickly.
Luckily, many people have realized this and have begun to do something to protect animals. Some groups put on performances to make people know the importance of protecting animals. Some raise money to help set up more zoos to keep them safe. Some try to get the government to pass laws on protecting the animals in danger. As a result, the number of these animals is growing.

I learned about life from an ant farm. When I was seven years old, my family created one. First, we put
clean sand in a thin glass box, and then we waited for the live ants to arrive. Shortly after the chilly ants were dropped into the glass structure, they got to work making tunnels. I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to
do. After hours of staring, I realized that the ants had assigned jobs.
With my mom ' s help, I kept a diary of what happened each day and named the ants. One day an incident struck
the ant farm. The pages of the diary, still wrinkled(皺巴巴) where tear drops fell, indicate the great loss.
'I had put my face so close to the structure that I accidentally knocked it over and all the tunnels caved in.
Although the ants survived(幸存) their earthquake, one by one they began to die.
I was terrified as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a comer of the farm.
My mother reported that the ants were dying of "frustration." They simply could not stand the reality that their
tunnels had been destroyed.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the
natural world, but it taught me much more. Over the years, I came to realize the ants were a study in the benefits
of teamwork. Working together, they were able to create an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that
they should be admired for their hard work. Day in and day out, each labored at their task.
The ant farm showed that teamwork and perseverance are indeed two key ingredients to success. But there
was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, humans cannot give up when they face disappointment. Unlike the ants, we have to
realize that if a tunnel caves in, we just have to build another. Giving up, I say, is not a choice.

3.What made the pages of the diary wrinkled?

4.What did the writer finally realize?
A. His mother taught him much more.
B. People should admire anyone for their hard work.
C. Humans cannot give up when facing adversity.
D. Perseverance is the only way to success.
5.Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. The writer broke the glass box because to the passage?
B. The arts died one by one because the tunnels were destroyed.
C. Unlike people, teamwork is not so important for the ants.
D. Giving up is a good way when we meet trouble

PowerPoint Presentations(PPT)are taking the place of writing on the blackboard with chalk. Someday, will robots take the place of human teachers?
In Japan, a robot is going to enter classrooms to help teachers. Last week the Japanese company Honda Motor Co. showed the public its robot at a Tokyo museum. The robot’s name is Asimo. Students will see Asimo in science classes and learn the wonders of science.
Asimo is 130 centimeters tall with a round head. It can jog, walk up stairs and wave. It can also avoid(避開)things on its way and have simple talks with you. Asimo is an experienced worker for humans. It has worked as a guide in showrooms. But this will be the first time it works as a teaching assistant in classrooms and in formal teaching!
How will Asimo help in class? A teacher explained the way Asimo works to students in last week’s show. Asimo has sensors(感應(yīng)器)inside its body to keep its balance.
The smart Asimo tilted(傾斜)its body when it stood on a shaking platform(平臺(tái)). Asimo kept its balance. But a wooden person beside Asimo fell (See the above picture).
When you walk, you pass your weight from the heel to the toe. The Japanese teacher explained this with Asimo at the museum. He moved the robot in slow move. Asimo made learning science more interesting for students!
Asimo will soon help teach thousands of primary students and junior high schools in two Japanese cities. Hopefully, robot teachers will arrive in our classrooms in China one day.
