Peer pressure is that strong feeling you might get to do the same things as other people of your age if you want them to like you. There is nobody that wants to be talked about or laughed at. But regretfully (遺憾地), we can’t always do things we like and have to forget who we truly are sometimes because it becomes more important for us to fit in with those around us.
Sometimes the pressure that we feel involves (參與) unimportant things, like being considered cool or dressing fashionably. We feel like doing things others do and saying things others say. Like starting to drink, because everyone does it, or maybe one of our friends drinks. But we do it anyway because we don’t want others to think we are scared. At that moment all that seems to be important to us is what they think of us, but later we regret the choice that we have made. Peer pressure often makes people take risks and put their life on the line.
So why do we give in to negative (消極的) peer pressure? Sometimes we just want to show that we are independent (獨(dú)立的). Others may go along because they are curious to try something new that other people around them are doing. The idea of following the crowd (大眾) influences our judgment (判斷) or common sense. And most of the time we give in because we don’t want to be made fun of or talked about for not doing what others are doing. We also do it because we are afraid of being refused by others or because we aren’t sure of ourselves. Also, we do it because we don’t want to lose a friendship, or we want to be liked by everyone. Those who give in to peer pressure have low self-esteem (自尊), uncertainty about themselves, and don’t have a sense of self-worth.
Sometimes peer pressure can also be good. What we have to do is to learn to tell the difference between positive (積極的) and negative pressure. It is OK sometimes to follow the crowd but we have to recognize when it does us more harm than good.

A well-known saying goes like this, “mind at peace give you coolness”. As the temperature rises day by day, it’s time to create some coolness besides keeping calm.
Chinese people have some traditional ways to reduce the summer heat without air-conditioners (空調(diào)). Such ways include healthy food and tools that also help people experience the beauty of summer. Here are some choices which will bring you a surprisingly cool experience.
The first one is plum juice(酸梅湯). It is a traditional healthy drink in summer in Beijing. It can reduce summer heat in the human body. People can have the juice all year round, yet summer is the best time.
The second is a bamboo mat. It is a lovely must-have that can cool your summer with a naturally nice smell. There are many sizes for beds and chairs and so on. It’s really comfortable to lie on a bamboo mat and drink some plum juice while watching TV in summer.
The last one is Chinese fans. Available in many shapes and materials, Chinese fans are special for the water-ink paintings they carry. Fans made of silk were often used by women, especially young unmarried ladies in ancient China. They used fans to hide their mouths or aces when they wanted to avoid showing shyness. If you want to lead a low-carbon(低碳) style of living, a fan is necessary in summer.
