【題目】 Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world. 1 In France, the USA and other countries, it is called ‘Mardi Gras’ or ‘Fat Tuesday’. In others like Spain, Italy or Brazil, Shrove Tuesday is at the end of Carnival(嘉年華). On this day many people eat pancakes: thin, flat cakes made in a pan.

2 It is the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter when people often give up or stop eating things that are bad for them like chocolate or fast food. At the end of Lent is Easter. 3 Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Traditionally, during Lent, people didn’t eat rich foods like butter and eggs, so to use them up they made pancakes from these ingredients on Shrove Tuesday.

4 People run in a race with a pancake in a pan. As they run, they have to toss the pancake (throw the pancake in the air and catch it in the pan) several times. 5The most famous pancake race takes place in a town called Olney, in the middle of England. People say that Olney has been celebrating pancake races since 1445!

A.Easter takes place on a different date each year because it depends on the moon.

B.It is celebrated in English-speaking countries like the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada.

C.Another tradition on Pancake Day in the UK is pancake racing.

D.Pancake Day is always on a Tuesday in February or March.

We all know that recycling rubbish is very important. But sometimes it is not so convenient (方便的) when we can’t find a recycling bin anywhere.

Now a team of middle school students from North Dakota, US has solved that problem by designing(設(shè)計(jì))the Recycling Bin app (應(yīng)用程序).

This app encourages people to recycle. It provides users with a map of local recycling centres, and it allows them to save locations as favourites. Besides, this app also reminds users to recycle.

The group of nine sixth-graders is from STEM Centre Middle School. They came up with the idea as part of a school project for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. Their school provided professional app training. It held a contest and gave Samsung tablets (三星平板電腦) as prizes.

The contest aims to develop interest in science, technology, engineering and Maths. In this contest, students present an app design that could solve a problem in their school or community. The nine students came up with the idea for the Recycling Bin when they saw a need for more recycling.

“We thought that this would really help a lot of people,” Jaden Hilkemann, 12, told Time For Kids.

They kept their design simple so that anyone could use it. Now the free Recycling Bin app has been put into use in the Google Play app store for Android phones or tablets.

“I was so excited when it showed up at the app store,” Seralyn Blake, 12, said. “A lot of people downloaded the app. It was pretty cool.”
