【題目】It is reported that some developed countries have shipped (運(yùn)往) broken parts of computers to China. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan.

Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an easy job. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. What is worse, at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they are really gone in the earth.

Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as “the e-waste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost.

Many of the poisons in e-waste find their way into the environment. An environmental group has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted.

Luckily, the Chinese government wants to change the situation (情況) . This year, China passed a new environmental protection law. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in the near future.

Football

Ancient Chinese, Roman and Egyptian writings help you know about games played by kicking a ball. We also know that in the twelfth century, in some English towns, on certain days of the year, hundreds of young men would kick a ball around the streets. Unluckily, fight often resulted. People were hurt and even killed. In 1314, such games were not allowed because they were too dangerous.

The game we now know as football developed in England in the early nineteenth century. Football was played in many schools and clubs as early as 1823. These schools and clubs often had different rules, but in 1863, the Football Association or FA was created, and standard rules were agreed for everyone to follow. These are the rules that many parts of the world use for football today. In 1871, a cup was given for the best English club, called the FA Cup. Football soon spread across the world.

In the United States and Canada, however, a different type of football game developed, where the football players could pick the ball up and carry it. The ball is also in a different shape. In American football there is also more violent contact (激烈交鋒) between players, who have to wear special clothing to protect themselves.

Football is now certainly the most popular game on earth. Why is that? One reason may be that it’s a simple game. All we need is a ball, and a few things to mark the goals. It’s a more relaxed game which can be enjoyed by just a few people of any age, on any piece of ground or even in the street. Another reason may be that it allows people to show their special skills. Some footballers become very rich and famous, like David Beckham. For this reason, many young people dream of becoming football stars and getting very rich. Television too has made football more popular. Millions of people can watch international matches such as the World Cup, which is held every four years.

1What helps you know about games played by kicking a ball?

2Where did the football game develop in the early 19th century?

3When were the football standard rules made for everyone to follow?

4Why do American football players have to wear special clothing?

5Why is football now the most popular game on earth?

But he waited.

About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long coat came hurrying across the street. He went directly to the waiting man.

“It gave me everything I asked for. You’ve changed, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall.”

“Oh, I grew a little after I was twenty.”

“Are you doing well in New York, Jimmy?”

“Well enough. I work for the city. Come on, Bob. We’ll go to a place I know, and have a good long talk about old times.”

The man from the West stopped suddenly and pulled his arm away. “You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said. “Twenty years is a long time, but not long enough to change the shape of a man’s nose.”

“It sometimes changes a good man into a bad one,” said the tall man. “You’ve been under arrest for ten minutes, Bob. Chicago policemen thought you might be coming to New York.
