A lot of earthquakes happen in the world every year. Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists tell us the outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates(板塊). The plates move very slowly. Sometimes they stop and don’t move for a long time. When some of the earth’s plates move suddenly, an earthquake happens.
Many earthquakes happen under the sea. Sometimes they happen near mountains. In fact, earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth. During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even break open. Houses fall. People are killed or hurt. Sometimes whole villages or cities are destroyed.
Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show “earthquake belts”. In the areas in these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we can make houses strong enough to stand against earthquakes.
In the future, scientists will be able to predict(預(yù)言) exactly when and where an earthquake will happen. They can tell us what to do and how to do it as well.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容判斷正(T)誤(F)
1.Few earthquakes happen in the world every year.
2.The outside of the earth is made of a number of different plates.
3.We can do nothing to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes.
4.A map showing the earthquake belts tells people what kind of houses can stand in an earthquake.

There are about 6,000 languages that are spoken around the world. But 43 percent of these languages are dying out, according to UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). If no action is taken, some of these languages will disappear.
Languages become endangered for many reasons. One is that some communities of native speakers of the endangered languages disappear, Huff Post reported. These people sometimes leave their communities and move to cities.
In addition, the languages of "dominant(占主導(dǎo)地位的)" cultures may drive other languages into extinction(滅絕), To get better education and jobs, young people have to focus their attention on learning dominant languages rather than their own languages.
Once a language dies out, it rarely comes back to life. Governments across the world are taking action to prevent this. In September, the US state of Alaska said that the loss of native languages was a hurry-up thing. It is now working to give new life to such languages, Quartz reported.
In New Zealand, the government said that they want more than 20 percent of the country's population to be able to speak basic Maori(毛利語(yǔ))by 2040. They plan to provide Maori lessons in all New Zealand schools by 2025. the New York Times reported.
