“How are you?”is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you?”is also a very unusually question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you ?”isn’t really a question and “Fine.”isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello.”or “Hi.”Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong.”But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.”It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone. People also don’t exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person say “I’ve to go now.”O(jiān)ften, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse,“Someone’s at the door.”“Something is burning on the stove.”The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hand up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person. Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly that they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正(T)誤(F).(5分)
小題1:“How are you?”is another way of saying “Hello.”or“Hi.”
小題2: It is polite to say “No. I disagree. I think you are wrong.”if you don’t agree with others.
小題3:When someone says“I have to go now.”on the phone, it means he wants to go on talking.
小題4:“Someone is at the door.”may be an excuse for finishing a phone call.
小題5:Sometimes people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about just because they try to be nice to each other.

Does this ever happen to you? Someone introduces you to a friend, you hear his or her name, and then two minutes later, you forget it. Or you go to the same restaurant every day and the owner always says “Hello” to you but you can never remember her name. If this happens, you are typical — actually most people have the problem remembering names.
Here are some ways that can help people remember names.
※ Repeat the person’s name loud at least three times while you talk together. For example, instead of saying “Nice to meet you.” say “Nice to meet you, Jack (for Sue or whatever the person’s name is).” Instead of saying “Where do you live?” you can say “Where do you live, Jack?”
※ Introduce the person by name to someone else right away.
※ Write the name down (with a little information about the person) as soon as possible.
There are other ways which may seem a little strange. However, try them.
※ Think of a story using the person’s name. For example, think to yourself, “Jack has a nice jacket.” Imagine Jack in a nice jacket.
※ Think of a rhyme(押韻)for the person’s name. For example, think to yourself, “Jack would look nice in black.” Imagine Jack wearing black clothes.
All these ways have one thing in common. You must pay attention to the people you meet. You can’t just meet someone, nod your head, say hello, and walk away. Remembering names takes work and practice.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,判斷下列句子正誤。正確的用“A”表示,不正確的用“B”表示。
小題1: Few people have problems remembering others’ names.
小題2:The word “typical” probably means “common”.
小題3: It may seem unusual to help remember a name by making up a story with it.
小題4:If you want to remember names easily, you must talk politely to the people you meet.
小題5: This passage mainly tells us how to get on well with others.

How should one invest a sum of money in these clays of inflation (通貨膨脹)? Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate. Only a brave man, or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market. Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings, and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques.
I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life. "The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands. Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people's wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves(奴隸)."
Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain men were very clever at measuring(量) the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout tire time. So it seems that the first clocks were human beings.
However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable(可靠的) ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks. Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.
Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in air antique clock and perhaps make a future profit(收益)?

小題4:The underlined phrase stately homes in paragraph(段落)4 means_________.
A.state-owned houses
B.houses in very good condition

A.to introduce the culture of antique clocks
