On March 14, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.

Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He educated the world with his knowledge that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His studies are of great help for later researches. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time, which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.

Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong mind and bravely smiled in face of difficulty.

When Hawking was 21, he developed a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” by using a computerized voice. But THIS didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, he cannot afford to be disabled in mind as well,” he once said.

Hawking traveled the world to attend different science meetings, visiting many places, including Antarctica (南極洲). He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.

He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a special flight to experience weightlessness just like in space. He hoped to travel into space one day.

“At first, I felt it was very unfair — why should this happen to me,” Hawking wrote in his book. “But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly pleased with my life.” Now, the great scientist may no longer be with us, but he will continue to live in our hearts now and in the future. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

At the beginning of November, the 35th Chinese Antarctic expedition (南極科考隊(duì)) set off for the polar region. This time, one of their main tasks is to build China’s first permanent (永久的) Antarctic airport, Science and Technology Daily reported.

There are more than 20 airports in Antarctica, according to Global Times. But none of them belong to China. China’s polar plane Xueying 601 has to take off and land at Russian airports.

The new airport will help Chinese aircraft take off and land in the South Pole. This will make it easier to transport scientific equipment and do research, Zhang Xia from the Polar Research Institute of China told Global Times.

In order to be environmentally friendly, the airport will be small, said Sun Bo, leader of the research team. It is much smaller than the usual airports in our cities.

However, this doesn’t make it easy to build the airport.

The site of the airport is an ice cap 28 kilometers away from Zhongshan Antarctic Station, Xinhua noted. An ice cap is a thick layer () of ice. It covers the land like a quilt. But this “quilt” is always moving Scientists have to find the slowest-moving part of the cap. You can hardly notice the movement of the ice in this area.

The next problem is the snow. The snow on the ice cap can be very thick. Also, it is as soft as cotton, which makes it hard to build a runway for airplanes. Scientists have to use a snow blower (吹雪機(jī)) to get rid of the snow on top of the cap. Them, they compact (壓緊) the rest of the snow with a road roller-like machine. This way, the snow will be strong and hard enough to build a runway on top of.

1What is the main task of the 35th Chinese Antarctic expedition?

A.Transport scientific equipment.B.Do research.

C.Set up a research station.D.Build an airport.

2What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.Why we need to explore Antarctica.

B.Where China’s polar planes take off and land.

C.What the new airport in Antarctica can do.

D.How other countries build their own airports.

3The difficulties of building a polar airport include all of the following EXCEPT ________.

A.the weather changes very oftenB.the snow on the ice cap is thick

C.the snow on the ice cap is softD.the ice cap is always moving

4What do scientists use a snow blower to do?

A.To make the ice cap stop moving.B.To clear the snow on the ice cap.

C.To compact the snow on the ice cap.D.To wash the runway for airplanes

5Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.China’s polar plane Xueying 601 has to take off and land at American airports.

B.The airport built in Antarctic is the same size as the usual airports in our cities.

C.To build the airport, scientists have to find the slowest-moving part of the cap.

D.The snow on the ice cap is so thick that it makes building a runway much easier.

It’s not like Talia Randle grew up dreaming of being the fastest grocery (食品雜貨店) bagger in the West.

But when the 17-year-old university student started her first job this summer as a clerk at Metropolitan Market in Washington, US, her natural skills appeared according to store manager Glen Hasstedt, her coach.

Hasstedt has trained four Washington State Best Baggers. He said every great bagger has a few key talents.

“They have to be fast, have great hand-eye coordination (協(xié)調(diào)能力) and be competitive and focused.” Hasstedt said.

Randle said bagging seemed natural to her and within a week of starting, co-workers were commenting on her speed.

“I enjoy it,” Randle said. “Heavy things should be on the bottom, and everything should be standing up. It’s a little bit like Tetris (俄羅斯方塊) or a puzzle.”

To represent Metropolitan Market at state level, competitors first have to be the winner in their store. They then compete against the best baggers in each of the company’s five other local stores.

In bagging contests, competitors are asked to place a number of items into a certain number of paper bags.

Judging is based on four criteria (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)): how fast the items are bagged, whether the bags are filled in such a way that items inside remain standing when placed on a table, how evenly (平均地) the weight is distributed among the bags and whether the bagger has a good attitude.

In some contests, judges slice away (撕開) one side of the paper bags to make sure items remain standing. Hasstedt said. They’re also looking to see if the bags are too full for a customer to pick up with on hand, he said.

Randle was a favorite to win the state competition. But once there, she was up against several very experienced competitors and had to deal with a loud audience that almost made her nervous.

“There were people wearing cow bells and yelling,” she said. “It was loud.”

That’s where Hasstedt’s mantra (原則) of “just stay focused and don’t let things distract you” came into play, she said.

But Randle did what her coach told her and ended up winning the state title, filling three bags in 47 seconds.

1According to the article, Talia Randle ________.

A.has always dreamed of being the fastest bagger

B.didn’t get along well with her workmates in the store

C.showed talent for bagging when she started doing it

D.found it hard to stay focused in the bagging contest

A.裝袋工B.礦工C.吹牛者D.售貨員

3Which of the following is one of the rules of bagging contests?

A.Different items should not be placed in the same bag.

B.The weight of the filled bags should be similar to each other.

C.Speed is the one and only measurement for a skillful bagger.

D.The audience has to keep quiet during the bagging contest.

4Which one is TRUE according to the article?

A.Talia Randle learned how to bag items in her university.

B.Bagging needs to use hands and eyes at the same time.

C.The heavy items should lie on the top of the bags.

D.Baggers must place as many items as they can in the bags.

5What is the article mainly about?

A.The popularity of bagging contests in the West.

B.How Talia Randle discovered the fun of bagging.

C.Glen Hasstedt’s secret training method for champion baggers.

D.Talia Randle’s road to becoming a star bagger in Washington State.
