Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services, a local retirement (退休)community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.

After my very first visit to Cantata, my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic(戲劇性的), but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.

Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25-30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents(居民) while we’re there.

You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “l(fā)ife back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.

Whether it was talking to 98-year-old “Hurricane Hilda” about her great days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.

Even the residents who don’t have amazing memories make the experience meaningful . I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldn’t think of much about her past, but she told me she’d never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling (漫談)”. It made me realize that it’s the little things that make life worth living. That’s something I won’t forget anytime soon.

If there’s one thing I’ve realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it’s that presence –just being there –means more than anything to many of the residents. And no matter how busy our lives are, there’s always time to make someone’s day.

For me, it feels great to be a source(源泉) of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

It’s easy to feel like you don’t have anything in common with the elderly –especially when you’re a teenager. But that’s not true at all.

I hate to be overly clichéd (陳詞濫調(diào)的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it’s important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often get something from teenagers too.

Teaching good manners(禮儀)to kids is very important . It’s best to let them develop good table manners when they are young. So they can carry these when they grow up.

Good eating manners begin with good table manners. Tell your kids that dinner time is family time. There should be no phones or text messages at the table. Instead, mealtime should be used for talking about family things.

Kids should say “please “ and “thank you” when asking for things on the table. They should not reach over other people to get things that they want.

Teach your child not to eat with his mouth open or talk with his mouth full. If it’s hard for them to understand, try showing them how it looks and sounds . When they see this, they’ll understand how they look to other people. They should also eat slowly and take small bites(咬).

Washing hands before and after eating is important to health. When eating at a friend’s house, tell your kids to remember to thank the host for the meal. Let them put their own dishes in the sink(水槽)after dinner. For elder children, they can help do the dishes.

If your math teacher assigns(分派) five problems you should do six. If your Chinese teacher assigns eight pages of reading, you should read nine. The more you practice, the more you learn.

Studying is a matter of personal preference(偏愛(ài)), so choose the way you are most comfortable with. Some people like working at night when the house is quiet, while others like doing their work early in the morning. Still others like studying as soon as they arrive home from school while the work is fresh in their minds. No matter which way you use, try to do your best.

Studying is your business and business comes before entertainment(娛樂(lè)). When you are studying, phone calls should go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks uneaten. Studying is the only thing in your mind. Nothing can pull you away from what you are studying.

Studying is like eating. You chew(咀嚼) it one bite at a time. You can plan what to do today, but don’t do too much. When you can’t finish the work you planned to do, you may lose confidence. On the other hand, you will not study well without a good plan. It all depends on how you arrange your time.

The students who hand in a clearly written paper is already half way to an A. Neat(工整的) papers are likely to get higher marks than sloppy(被潑水弄濕的) ones. When you write neatly and do your work carefully, the thoughts in your mind are clear. You are able to make fewer mistakes.
