My granddaughter,10. was very happy the day before yesterday because her mother and the mother of one of her classmates took them to a park and a Pizza Hut (比薩餅屋) to celebrate Children's Day. For a whole day,the two girls played heartily―no homework,no extracurricular (課外) skills training. The happy life lasted only for one day. Yesterday, everything returned to normal : doing homework till late at night and going over lessons learned at last weekend's English and "Olympic mathematics"(數(shù)學(xué)奧賽) courses.

Every time I went to my daughter's house in the evening,I saw my granddaughter sitting by the small desk in her room doing math exercises or writing a compositions given by her teacher. On the white wall behind the desk are some words she wrote. One sentence reads : u Why is the exercise endless?"

Poor girl !

Although teachers have stopped giving afterschool homework to primary school children, parents have been forcing their kids to take part in different kinds of extracurricular training courses―learning English, painting, music instrument (樂器) ,weiqg , "Olympic mathematics" and so on,every Saturday and Sunday.

Are these extracurricular courses really necessary in children's education? The answer is certainly "No". Take the socalled "Olympic mathematics" for example. These courses are very difficult for children to understand. Often, they are difficult even for adults (成年人) .

Here are some suggestions given by the English children posted on the website about how to help Africa. Which one do you think is the best?

I think health is the   most important thing. We need to make sure that the money we

give is spent wisely. The money should be spent first on clean water   supplies and better

health care.

—Robin, aged 16, Birmingham

I think the most   important thing is to improve the education of the African countries.

There is an old saying, "If you give a man a fish, you'll feed   him for a day. If you teach

him how to fish, you'll feed him for a lifetime. " We need to   help people to help

themselves, not just throw money at the problem when it appears(出現(xiàn)).

―Rebecca , aged 15 , Liverpool

People seem to give a lot   more money to charity(慈善機(jī)構(gòu))when there is a sudden,

huge disaster(災(zāi)難)like the earthquake. It's good for people to   do so. But I also think

that we should give a small part of our salary(工資)to charity as well. If everyone did

that, it would make a big difference.

―Mary, aged 14, Stratford-on-Avon

Giving money to charity   can help, but it's not the final answer. I think what these

countries need is a good government.

―Bethany, aged 16, Newcastle

The best thing we can do   is to send experts(專家)like engineers, doctors and

teachers to help the people to help themselves.

―Robert, aged 16, Cardiff

Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special (特別的) program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.

Each summer,200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy, but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills.

There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours, some of the teenagers learn phototaking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time.

When people live together, they should have rules. In this program, the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, "Why did it happen? What should we do about it?"
