Many People ask me, “Paul, do you have a car in Xiamen?” I always replay, “no way. Even if I had the money to buy a car, I wouldn’t buy one.” Why? Well I think the buses are great. I used to ride my bike everywhere, but now I only ride 2 times a week. It can be dangerous riding a bike with the traffic situation getting busier and busier.
Now I take the bus. If I compare Xiamen’s bus service to what we have at home, it’s a million times better. Firstly, the bus service in my home town is expensive, unreliable(不可靠的) and inconvenient. Most people in England don’t trust public transport so they just buy a car to get from A to B. I find that here, there’s no need to have a car. I have bought a traffic card, which gets me wherever I want to go within Xiamen island for 9 mao. And I never really wait that long for a bus either. Some people do say, “oh, but the buses are so crowded.” That can’t be helped either. There are a lot of people here. This is China. There are some things that we just have to stand. The bottom line is …if I travel to work by taxi, it will cost about 505 RMB a month. If I go by bus it costs 39 RMB. You do the math!
Talking about taxis, I was told that all the old taxis would be gone by now. Sometimes I still get into an old noisy smelly taxi which feels like it’s going to break down at any time. And I still pay the same price as taking a newer taxi. And why are most of the taxi drivers so easy to get angry? And why do they all change shift(換班) at the same time in the evening when it’s busy? Am I the only one that thinks that the system(系統(tǒng)) needs improving?

A. 站著 B. 維持現(xiàn)狀 C. 忍耐、忍受
5. Which is TRUE about the taxis in Xiamen according to Paul?
A. The price of taxi is too expensive. B. Some of the taxis are too old.
C. Most of the taxi driver are friendly.

Music is different from songs. Songs express feelings with lyrics, but music with tones (音調(diào)). Unlike songs, music tones in themselves have no specific meanings. Different people may get different things from the same musical performance. Though some music works are difficult to understand, people need music in their daily life because it brings fun to them. Different people like different music: some love classical music, and others take pleasure in pop music. Most young people like pop music.
Pop music began in the USA and became popular around the world during the 1950s and 60s. The best-known early kind of pop music was “rock and roll”. Pop music has taken the place of native music in many parts of the world. It has caused the number of people for “jazz” music to become much smaller than in the 1950s and earlier and it has now begun to become the most popular.
