Christmas is as important to British people as Spring Festival is to us. Every year on Dec 25, English people gather together to celebrate this holiday. It is the most important family gathering of the whole year.
In the UK, people start preparing for Christmas soon after Halloween — as early as the beginning of November! In every shop window I pass on my way to school, I see Santa decorations (裝飾), candy canes (拐杖糖) and presents. The whole of London is getting ready for Christmas.
One tradition in the UK is to have an advent calendar (圣誕倒數(shù)日歷). It has 24 little flaps (片狀小門) that you can open starting from Dec1. There is a tiny gift behind each flap. It can be makeup, chocolate or stationery, depending on what kind of calendar you buy. You can open one flap each day until you get to the last flap on the morning of Dec 25! This tradition began in the mid-19th century in Protestant areas (新教徒地區(qū)) in Germany.
Another interesting tradition began in 1954. Every November, London is lit up by thousands of decorative lights. The lights are shaped like the common symbols of Christmas, such as angels, reindeers (馴鹿) and Christmas trees. It is a breathtaking sight from far away and it is wonderful how the colors create an atmosphere of celebration.
In London, we don’t celebrate Christmas for only one day. You can feel the festive mood around the whole city from November until January.

Nowadays, many children spend hours a day looking at computer screens or other digital (數(shù)碼的) products. Some eye care doctors say all the screen time has caused more children to have what they call computer vision syndrome (視力綜合癥).
Nathan Warford is an optometrist in the US. He says he has seen more children having eye problems. “More children come into my office because their parents have noticed that they have headaches (頭疼)or red eyes, or because their degree of short-sightedness appears to be increasing (增加)very fast and they’re worried,” he said.
Dr. Warford says part of the problem is that even if their eyes start to feel uncomfortable or they start to get a headache, some children don’t tell their parents, because they don’t want their games or the computer to be taken away. Another part of the problem is that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when they look at the screen.A person who uses a computer or a digital product blinks about a third as much as we normally(正常地) do in everyday life. If eyes can’t stay wet or are too tired, they will not be protected like normal.

A.They think it is not serious.
B.They don’t want their parents to worry.

D.They want to continue playing computer games.
2.People normally blink about 20 times a minute. How many times do they blink if they use a computer?
A.About 4 times B.About 7 times C.About 11 times D.About 15 times
3.From the passage, we can learn that________ .
A.blinking is good for eyes
B.sleeping late is bad for eyes
C.children should blink as much as possible
D.we shouldn’t look at screens in a dark room
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Some ways of protecting children’s eyes.
B.Some information about the latest digital products.
C.Dr. Warford’s experience of working out eye problems.
D.Eye problems in children caused by using digital products.

Why is clean water important to developing countries? A recent report shows that about 80 percent of diseases in developing countries are caused by poor water and low sanitation(衛(wèi)生)conditions. But she knew she was right. In protest, Hadjara refused to eat dinner that night. After her father questioned Hadjara’s head teacher, he understood the importance of hand-washing and his daughter’s intentions(目的). The girl really wanted her family to live longer and healthier lives.
For people in developing countries, clean water can change many things, especially improve their health. So, from now on, let’s avoid wasting water and take action to save water, which is important to people all over the world.
